Hunting Impala in Namibia

Experience the Thrill Of Impala Hunting in Namibia

The impala is an iconic African plains game species scattered throughout southern and eastern Africa. It remains a popular game hunting trophy. The impala (Aepyceros melampus) has three subspecies, with one of the subspecies, namely the Southern impala (Aepyceros melampus melampus) inhabiting Mozambique. The impala is a 110–160-pound medium-sized antelope with a reddish-brown coat and a white underbelly. It has a dark stripe near the bottom of its tail, while its thighs have a vertical black stripe running down the back. Only males in this species have lyre-shaped horns reaching 16-35 inches. Impalas are herbivores that are more active when it is cooler, therefore the early morning and late afternoon. This is the best time to target them, while they are grazing or near the waterhole. These antelopes are extremely alert, wary, and vigilant, making for a challenging game hunting experience. Their exceptional sense of smell and keen eyesight make stalking them without being noticed very difficult! Game hunting methods for the impala include stalking them in the herd, which can be a taxing experience with the number of animals on alert, or targeting them for a blind near a waterhole, as they come to drink. The best areas within Mozambique to enjoy impala hunting would be in the northern and western sections.

More About namibia Impala Hunting

While impala are often one of the first African plains game species that a novice hunter will target, they are often included in plains game packages, as they prove to be an exciting and enjoyable hunt for both new and experienced hunters.

Shot Placement on an Impala Hunt

While some hunters may wish to take more risky or challenging shots such as the neck or head, it is best to stick to the basics to ensure a quick, clean, and humane kill. Aim for the bottom third of the antelope, just behind the shoulder. This shot will target the heart and lungs, resulting in a quick death for the animal.

What Caliber Rifle is Used for Hunting Impala?

While a .22 can be used when impala hunting, it should be remembered that your shot placement will need to be precise and on target, or you may find yourself exploring the bush in search of a wounded impala! A hunter can consider a 7mm to a 30-caliber that is adequate and will ensure a humane kill, should your shot placement be correct. Targeting an impala with a bow is also legal in Mozambique and can be used to hunt from the blind.
