Specialty Game Hunting Safaris: The Slender Mongoose

Join an adrenaline-filled hunting adventure targeting the slender mongoose

The slender mongoose (Herpestes sanguineus) is a small mammal found in much of sub-Saharan Africa.  The slender mongoose is known under many names, including black-tipped mongoose, black-tailed mongoose, and the common slender mongoose. This specialty game hunting trophy is listed with a status of “least concern” by the IUCN.

They enjoy inhabiting savannas and semi-arid plains but are often found at the side of roads or near human settlements, where they are seen as pests because they target chickens and their eggs.

The slender mongoose spends most of its time alone or lives in pairs, often sharing burrows with members of related species. Although not specifically territorial, the slender mongoose does have a home range that it stays within and marks its territory with scent-marking.

There are two peak breeding periods within the year, the shorter rainy season (October-November) and the longer rainy season (February-April). Both sexes have multiple mates, and with a gestation period of 57-65 days, females can birth 2-4 pups twice a year.

These mongooses are diurnal, retreating to their burrows at night while foraging for food during daylight hours. They are omnivores, feeding on a variety of foods, including carrion, ants, termites, locusts, frogs, snakes, beetles, nuts, fruits, and seeds. They are the most adept of all the mongooses at tree climbing, leading to a treasure of birds and bird eggs to feed upon. In turn, they are preyed on by birds of prey such as eagles and hawks, as well as snakes and jackals.

Size and Appearance

On your game hunting safari, keep your eyes peeled for a small animal, roughly 10-15 inches long. They have a reddish-brown to orange-red coat, which can even look gray at times. They have a light brownish-yellow underbelly, but the most prominent detail of the slender mongoose is its long, slender tail, with a red or orange tip. You may be confused with their fur color, but the tip of the tail is a dead giveaway of the slender mongoose. They have short, stubby legs with long claws for digging, small ears, and a short snout.

Hunting Methods

When we mention keeping an eye out for the mongooses when hunting in the wild, keep two peeled, as these fast little creatures appear and disappear with remarkable speed on a game hunting adventure. They are usually spotted while driving around, after which the hunter continues the spot-and-stalk hunt on foot, allowing for a fair chase.

Challenges and Rewards

Slender mongoose hunting in the wild is an exciting hunting adventure! The most challenging part is finding or spotting the mongooses and then ensuring that they don’t disappear down into their burrows which are all linked underground, allowing easy escape options for them. A hunting safari targeting the slender mongoose is a fun and varied game hunting adventure, sure to get the adrenaline pumping! The slender mongoose would make an interesting talking point in any game hunting trophy room.

Rifles and Requirements

The slender mongoose as a game hunting target is extremely small, weighing in at only 1-1.5 pounds and this is an important consideration when choosing a rifle. A suggestion would be to target the slender mongoose using either a shotgun with bird-hunting ammunition or even a .22 rimfire rifle.
