Firearms and Hunting Permits
Frequently Asked Questions
All African nations require you to obtain a temporary firearms import permit, mostly in advance. In many cases, your African outfitter applies for it on your behalf. Handguns, fully automatic and military-type firearms are not permitted, the number of guns and calibers, and ammunition you can travel with is also limited. Archery gear doesn’t usually require a permit, but some countries ban crossbows. When traveling on your African hunting safari, you will be required to provide proof that the firearms you are traveling with are yours. This means that for travelers from countries with gun control laws, a copy of your regular gun license or permit, for US citizens use Customs Form 4457.
It is not advisable to change your selection of firearm/s (even if there is enough time) once you’ve already made the application, there’s a high risk of confusion. Officials deal with the paperwork that they have in hand and if for some reason they have the old application on hand, they can and most likely will deny you entry because the details of your rifle don’t match what they have.
Ensure that when you are completing any paperwork the serial numbers are correct. A simple mistake in reversing numbers or a number that is unclear on your form will result in an invalid permit.
Each airline has slightly different rules and it’s important to check with the airline you intend to use before booking any tickets or applying for a permit for your African hunting safari. This is important because there are different restrictions on the maximum weight of ammunition allowed. It is sometimes better to use a “gun-friendly carrier” even if they are slightly more expensive.
You will need to transport your firearm/s in a lockable hard case. Ensure that you have the keys on hand should you be asked to open the case (usually when they check the serial numbers on the permit match those on the firearm). You should also carry copies of all the necessary paperwork with you. Remember if traveling with a bolt action rifle you will need to remove the bolt from the firearm and leave it in the gun case.
Most airlines will require you to store your ammunition in a separate lockable ammunition box, but some require you to store the ammunition in the gun case, it’s important to check this with the airline that you are using for your African safari.
Unfortunately for those hunters who use Black powder rifles, it is strictly prohibited to fly with black powder and percussion caps. However, you can arrange for these items with the outfitter in the destination country of your African hunting safari.
Paperwork for USA citizens traveling to Africa with firearms
Travelers from the USA will require a US Customs Form 4457. It’s advised to fill in two: One for your weapons, the other for your related game hunting gear such as rangefinders or photographic equipment. African countries generally accept a US Customs form 4457 as proof of ownership, however, it is not accepted as a legal document for the temporary exportation or importation of firearms into or out of the USA. This customs form will ensure hassle-free (and duty-free) reentry when returning to the USA from your African safari.
South Africa will not accept Form 4457 if it is older than six months (even though Form 4457 can be used multiple times and does not expire). It is advisable to have this form issued in the year in which you wish to hunt.
