Crocodile Hunting in Mozambique – A Thrilling Adventure

Our adventure began with a four-hour drive from the airport, leading us to the breathtaking Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique. It was my first time visiting this colossal body of water, which is one of the largest dams in Africa, covering over 2,700 km². We stayed in a picturesque guesthouse overlooking the dam, with views of the many fishing boats scattered across its vast expanse.
The next morning, we loaded our supplies into deep-sea boats and crossed the mighty lake. Given the size of Cahora Bassa and its frequent large swells, it’s no place for regular boats. Once safely across, we arrived at our camp and were greeted with cold drinks and a sense of excitement. Though we had planned to scout for the next day’s hunt, my husband wasted no time. That very afternoon, he shot a massive crocodile, much to our surprise and delight.
The challenge for the remaining days was finding a new adventure. We asked our outfitter about securing another tag for me, and with his assurance, we began preparations for my own crocodile hunt.
After a quick practice session at a nearby cove, I felt ready to take on the challenge, borrowing my husband’s trusted .300 Win Mag. On the southern side of the lake, we tracked down a huge crocodile near an estuary frequented by locals and livestock. It was a formidable creature, seemingly fearless and likely responsible for many human and animal fatalities over its lifetime. Estimated to be nearly 100 years old, this croc had seen wars and likely survived more than a few deadly encounters.
With my heart racing, I set up my rifle and prepared for the crucial shots. A spine shot was essential to stop the croc from fleeing into the water, followed by a lung shot to ensure it was down for good. Thankfully, my shots hit the mark, and I had the incredible experience of bringing down a 4.6-meter (15.1-foot) crocodile – a serious trophy by any standard.
One of the most nerve-wracking parts of a crocodile hunt is approaching the animal after the kill. Even when you’re sure it’s dead, a croc’s body can continue twitching for hours, a chilling reminder of the power and unpredictability of these ancient predators.

This Mozambican adventure will forever be etched in my memory, an experience of excitement, precision, and respect for one of Africa’s most formidable creatures.
