Shot Placement while Leopard Hunting in Tanzania

Leopard hunting methods utilised in Tanzania would be the baiting method, where the leopards are lured using bait that is hung in a tree. The bait is hung just low enough to entice the leopard, but high enough that scavengers cannot get to it. The bait will be hung in areas an adult tom is known to inhabit, in the hopes of luring him for the hunter to target. Activity at the baiting area is then monitored via a trail cam and if the leopard is visiting the area, a temporary blind is erected. Hunters then sit in wait for this dangerous African cat, willing it to appear to claim their dangerous game hunting trophy. A wounded leopard is no joke, so make that first shot count. Be sure to adequately prepare for the hunt and ensure that you are familiar with a leopard’s anatomy for better shot placement.

Keep the following in mind when leopard hunting in Tanzania: When targeting this elusive African cat, keep in mind that the leopard will be shot while under or next to a bait, while in a sitting position and not in the classic broadside position. If the leopard is reaching up to the bait, their body position will also change. A leopard is not an ungulate, meaning that the heart and lungs sit further back. A leopard generally has a soft body and is highly susceptible to hydrostatic shock. Don’t even consider a headshot, as the game hunting trophy will be totally ruined. Shot placement is critical, and the hunter is advised to study the leopard's anatomy, as angles and body position can again play a vital role.

What Caliber Rifle is used when Hunting Leopard in Tanzania?

Hunting leopards in Tanzania requires a minimum caliber of .375 with a 300-grain bullet.
