To reach Lake Cahora Bassa for your hunting adventure, these are possible steps to follow for a smooth journey, it is however always best to talk to your host Juan first.
You could start by booking a flight to Johannesburg (JNB), the main international gateway to Southern Africa. Most major airlines offer flights from North America, Europe, and other continents to Johannesburg.
From Johannesburg, you’ll catch a connecting flight to Tete, the nearest city to Lake Cahora Bassa. Flights are typically available through LAM (Mozambique Airlines) or SA Airlink, with a flight duration of about 2 hours.
Once in Tete, you have two options for reaching your hunting camp near Lake Cahora Bassa:
Both transfer options can be arranged through your safari operator in advance for a seamless experience.
Upon arrival at camp, you’ll be welcomed to a place where rustic charm meets comfort. The camp blends seamlessly with the surrounding natural beauty, offering the perfect retreat after a long day of Africa hunts. The accommodations are simple yet comfortable, providing everything you need—cozy beds, hearty meals, and a relaxed atmosphere to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences. Here, the true spirit of Africa is never far away, and you’ll be immersed in the sights and sounds of the bush, setting the stage for an unforgettable hunting experience.
Hunting Crocodile and Hippo in the Cahora Bassa area of Mozambique is a truly unforgettable experience—one that demands skill, patience, and a bit of luck. Both of these animals are among Africa’s Dangerous 7, a group of creatures that represent the pinnacle of dangerous game hunting in Mozambique. If you are after a thrilling and challenging hunt, the combination of Crocodile and Hippo in this remote corner of Africa offers a test of your abilities.
The hunt for Crocodiles at Lake Cahora Bassa is not for the faint-hearted. These predators can be deceptively elusive, their scaly bodies almost invisible as they float in the water or lie motionless on the riverbanks, waiting for prey. The challenge lies in getting close enough to take the perfect shot. Crocodile hunting requires a steady hand and an excellent sense of timing, as these reptiles are fast in the water and even faster when they feel threatened. As a hunter you know that shot placement is everything—hitting the right spot on the Crocodile’s head is critical to ensure a quick, ethical kill. It’s a high-risk, high-reward hunt, one that will keep you on edge every step of the way.
Then, there’s Hippo hunting. At first glance, Hippos might seem like gentle giants, but don’t be fooled—these animals are responsible for more human deaths in Africa than any other large mammal. While they spend most of their time in the water, Hippos are highly territorial, and when provoked, they can be deadly. The hunt for Hippos in Mozambique is a heart-pounding experience. Their massive size and powerful jaws make them formidable opponents, but their unpredictable behavior is what makes hunting them so challenging. Spotting them on land or in the water requires a sharp eye and getting too close can be dangerous. But the thrill of tracking a Hippo through the dense vegetation or waiting for it to emerge from the water makes the reward that much sweeter. Like with Crocodile hunting, a perfectly placed shot—usually to the brain or heart—is crucial for a clean kill.
Both Crocodile and Hippo hunting in Mozambique have a rich tradition. The Crocodile is prized for its skin, which is used to make high-end leather goods, and its meat is considered a delicacy in some cultures. As for the Hippo, their meat is sought after for its richness and flavor, though hunting them is strictly regulated to ensure the population is sustainably managed. Both animals are considered dangerous, making them particularly appealing to any hunter looking for a challenge that goes beyond the typical safari experience.
There are a few things you should keep in mind when pursuing crocodile and hippo in Mozambique. First, the terrain around Lake Cahorra Bassa is tough—dense forests, swampy areas, and riverbanks all make getting into position a challenge. The heat is intense, and long hours on foot can take a toll. Second, both Crocodile and Hippo are unpredictable. Crocodiles may seem slow and lazy at first, but they can explode into action without warning. And while Hippos may appear calm as they graze or wallow in the water, they can charge at incredible speeds if they feel threatened.
Safety is always a priority when hunting dangerous game, and in places like Cahorra Bassa, where the wilderness is untamed, experience is key. Your expert host and guides with trackers who know the animals and the area intimately are invaluable, ensuring that you’re able to hunt responsibly while minimizing risk.
