**** Observers are welcome on this Leopard hunt @ US$ 375 per night
Botswana offers a diverse hunting experience and is recognized as one of the premier destinations when hunting in Africa for Leopard, Cape Buffalo and Elephant, with a variety of plains game hunting safaris.
Botswana’s hunting areas are well managed, offering prime opportunities for hunters while following sustainable hunting practices. Whether hunting the arid landscapes of the Kalahari, Okavango or Chobe regions, hunters are guaranteed a world-class safari. Hunting in Botswana contributes to the protection and management of wildlife populations, preserving the local ecosystems. This highly sought after destination offers international hunters the opportunity to hunt in a stunning and natural environment.
This Leopard hunt will take place in the NG4 and NG5 hunting concessions. The two adjacent blocks are situated in the “heart” of the world renown Bushmanland regions situated in the central-western side of Botswana. These hunting concessions are vast and unspoiled wilderness areas in northern Kalahari region, home to several communities of San Bushman. The hunting areas are flat with random rocky outcrops. Poor sand and soil quality make commercial agriculture initiates nonviable, thus perfect for dangerous game hunting.
General vegetation is characterized by low tree and shrub savanna, coupled with woodland forests. The forests consist mainly of Manketti tree in the northwest, with sparsely spread Apple leaf in between. Acacia and impressive Camel Thorn trees are also prominent. Baobab, Buffalo Thorn, Silver Cluster and Marula trees completes the typical African bush-veld picture. These hunting concessions are unfenced and 3,4 million acres in size. the African wilderness stretches for miles in every direction.
“What is the outfitters success rate?” is a question typically by clients when choosing a Leopard hunting safari. Jaco and team can proudly boast a 100% success rate Leopard hunting in NG4 and NG5.
International hunters will enter Botswana by landing at Maun International Airport. Direct flights to Maun are offered from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, Katima Mulilo in Namibia, or from Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. Oliver Tambo is considered to the gateway to southern African countries.
Should you choose to reach Maun via South Africa, hunters may need to overnight in Johannesburg depending, on the arrival and departure times of regional flights. For the flights to/from Oliver Tambo and Maun, we would recommend using the services of Airlink. The airline is on time, the snacks are great and Airlink allows transportation of firearms. Should you require accommodation in Johannesburg, we would recommend African Sky Boutique Hotel, situated 10 minutes from Oliver Tambo International Airport. African Sky provides transfers to and from the airport and can assist with firearm permits while in South Africa (SAPS 520 needs to be completed) For further information, see “Affiliate Services” below in the listing.
From Maun, transfer to the hunting lodge will be by road taking approximately four hours and costing US$ 1300 for the round trip. Private charters can be arranged and the flight will be about an hour and costing +- US$ 5200, depending on the fluctuating fuel costs at the time of the hunting safari.
If you are under no strict time limit, we would suggest the road transfer as Botswana is incredibly scenic and the vehicles are more than comfortable.
Botswana offers some of the most exciting hunts in Africa, regularly producing “Big Cats” with high rates of success. In Botswana, Leopard hunts with hounds are legal and a government official will be present at all times. For this Leopard hunt, the “baiting method” will be used. Being nocturnal, these cats are most active from late afternoon and in early mornings. In Botswana, hunting Leopards at night and using artificial light is not permitted. Avoid Leopard hunting during lambing season as the opportunity will be greater for a Leopard to find a free meal than taking a bait.
Hunting Leopards with Bushman trackers at your side is an experience on its own. Bushman are master trackers and have honing their skills for thousands of years.
Application Documents (Botswana)
On arrival in Botswana, hunters will be required to pay an import tax on ammunition only, in Botswana Pula, the local currency.
For a Leopard hunt in Botswana, a minimum, caliber of .375 is recommended loaded with a 300-grain tip. Many hunters do prefer larger calibers such as a .416 Rigby and .458 for enhanced stopping power and maximum damage.
An high quality expanding tip is to be used, causing enough damage to ensure a quick and humane kill. On a Leopard hunt, regardless of the caliber, shot placement is critical. A wounded Leopard is exceptionally dangerous. High-quality optics are recommended.
Accommodations in Bushmanland are typical luxury safari tents with en-suite bathrooms. Tents are spacious, serviced daily clean, and set with incredible backdrops of the African savanna.
Entertainment and dining areas are typical African “Lapa” lodges with large “fire pits” and an African ambiance. This is the place to enjoy a cold beer and whiskey, just taking in the beauty and charm of Africa.
Botswana’s hunting season runs from April through to September. When safari hunting in Botswana, the best time would be during the dry season, which is from May to middle October.
During these months, temperatures are cooler, and water becomes scarce. Animals are then drawn to permanent water sources such as rivers and lagoons. These cooler temperatures also assist when Leopard hunting as the baits remain “fresh” for longer. The best time for a Leopard hunt would be June to August.
Botswana’s tremendous diversity in terms of wildlife and habitats offers a wide variety of non-hunting activities, which include:
