Hunting in Cameroon: Savanna Territory

The concession totals a hunting area of more than 360 000 acres. Kourouk, can be found located between two of the National Parks, namely Bouba Ndjida and Le Boune. The Fara River forms the Eastern and Southern boundary spanning a length of over forty miles, perfect for Hippo hunts with a width in places of over three hundred yards. The habitat is bush and tree savanna with grassy plains.  The southern plains extends from Lake Chad to the Adamacoua regions.

This hunt in Cameroon also includes Central African Rock Python which is available for hunting@ US$ 2750. Not many hunters can boast such a unique trophy. Nocturnal hunting safaris are also available for hunters wanting to experience a night hunt, including Spotted Hyena (US$ 1480) , Porcupine (US$ 450) and Civet (US$ 750).

Lord Derby Eland Hunting

This Lord Derby Eland  hunt is going to take time, commitment, dedication and focus. This safari is for the elite group of hunters wanting to achieve something unique, much like ascending Mount Everest.

Mature Eland bulls are wise and very illusive. Excellent tracking skills will be required. Vehicles are often used to find fresh spoor, or dung or other sign of activity near natural licks, watering points etc. It may take a few days of hard hunting and walking, with many hours on your feet before you even get a glimpse of your Trophy Eland. Tracking down the trophy bull and getting into shooting position will be about patience, walking ability and focus.

Central African Giant Eland can weigh over 2000 pounds and will not go down easily. A head shot for obvious reasons is to be avoided. The preferred shot would be into the vitals from the broadside position. Due to habitat, frontal shots, or quartering towards/away from you may also be a consideration. You, your tracker and professional hunter will walk down the nomadic trophy Lord Derby Eland until he is “in the salt”.

Northwestern Buffalo Hunting

Northwestern Buffalo are also known Western or West African Buffalo. West African Buffalo are endemic to the northern savanna regions of Cameroon. In the southern more forested areas, you will find the Forest, or Dwarf Buffalo which are distinguished by horn shape, color and size.

While Northwestern Buffalo may be smaller than Cape Buffalo, many hunters consider the Northwestern Buffalo to be more aggressive and unpredictable. Bottom line when Buffalo hunting, they are all dangerous. Buffalo do not forgive or forget.

Western Roan Hunting

Roan antelope have pale reddish-brown fur, black and white masked faces and are one of Africa’s favorite plains game antelope. Both male and female Roan have horns, enabling Roan to defend themselves from predators patrolling the savannas. Africa has six recognized sub-species of Roan. The Western Roan is found in this Northern Savannah region of Cameroon in the tall grass and open woodland areas. Roan hunts often take place in the late afternoon as these antelope tend to drink at that time of day. You and your professional hunter will be sure to check along the river banks and other water sources on the concession.

Roan are listed and classified by Cites as a species of antelope of “least concern” and a permit will not be required.

The best time to go hunting in Cameroon

The preferred time for savanna hunting in Cameroon is during the dry season, which runs from January through March. During these months, grasses are lower, and water sources become scarce. These conditions make finding and spotting them a little easier. The dry months also makes the terrain a little easier to navigate, with fewer obstacles such as mud pools and dense and overgrown vegetation.

During these months, the warmer and drier conditions of the savanna as long days are needed for tracking and stalking. Mornings and evenings in the savanna can be cooler, but midday heat can be intense, so remaining hydrated is critical.

Additional Plains Game Hunting and Trophy Fees

Extending the hunting safari to add these unique animals can be arranged directly with Jaco at a rate of US$ 3500 per day.

The Faro River is packed with Tiger fish and Giant Catfish. Low light / evening fishing safaris are aimed at Nile Perch which makes for excellent eating. Your private chef  will be delighted to prepare this delicacy.
