Game Hunting Conditions in Tanzania
- You can only hunt animals that fall under your specific license.
- Animals cannot be hunted from a vehicle or chased.
- Hunting is only allowed during daylight hours.
- Females, young, or immature animals may not be hunted.
Minimum Rifle Calibers When Game Hunting in Tanzania
- When undertaking dangerous game hunting in Tanzania, the minimum legal requirement is a .375 caliber.
- For Cape Buffalo, larger calibers such as a .404, 416, 458, 458 Lott, or any quality double rifle from .470 and up is recommended.
- Using hand guns on a hunting safari is strictly forbidden.
- Hunting dangerous game with a bow or crossbow is also forbidden, but they can be used on an African plains game hunt.
- Please be advised that the hunting permits are also significantly more expensive for bow or cross bow hunting than a rifle hunting license.
The Best Time to Hunt in Tanzania
The hunting season in Tanzania runs annually from 1st July to 31st December. These months constitute the “dry season,” but the months of November and December may experience some rainfall.
The reality is that there is no “bad” time to hunt in Tanzania, it is a privileged experience that many would one to undertake.

When flying into Tanzania, hunters should land at either Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha.
- From there onwards, hunters will enjoy a domestic flight on Precision Air, from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport to Dodoma.
- A flight from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma will cost approximately US$300 return and take around 1h 15 min.
- A flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Dodoma will cost approximately US$150 return, and will take about 1hr 30 min.
- Upon your arrival in Dodoma, you will journey about 3 1/2 hours by road to reach the hunting grounds.
