Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony gained its independence in 1975. This “wild” game hunting destination is located on the Indian Ocean, opposite Madagascar, the world’s fourth largest “Island Country”.
After decades of civil war, Mozambique opened its doors and welcomed international hunters, offering an incredible of game hunting opportunities. Miles upon miles of open spaces, no high fences where hunters have to search, stalk and hunt animals. Mozambique, especially the Niassa Province which borders Tanzania to the north offers some of the best “free-range” hunting in Africa .Mozambique is known for its abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, and leopards. Hunting in Mozambique is highly regulated, with specific hunting seasons and limited quotas in place to ensure sustainability.
The open savannas and mountain ranges set the tone for dream African hunts. A hunt in Mozambique offers incredible Sable antelope, Big Four Species (excluding White and Black Rhino), producing phenomenal Lion and Leopard trophies. Hunting in Mozambique, in untouched and unspoiled wilderness, with granite hills and Miombo woodlands is a once in a life experience not to be missed.
Hunt in Mozambique and follow in the footsteps of Jim Corbett, Ernst Hemingway and “Teddy”, Mr Theodore Roosevelt.
Leopard hunting methods in Mozambique normally make use of the baiting method. A wide variety of areas will identified across the hunting concession and will be baited, usually utilizing fresh meat from recent plains game hunts.Hunters, along with their outfitters will traverse the areas and daily check these baits for sign of Leopard activity.
Camera traps, also referred to as “trail camera’s” are made use of to capture images of the cats who have visited the bait. Only matures “Toms” may be hunted. If a leopard is identified as being suitable, temporary blinds will be constructed and the “game of patience” will begin.
In the tsetse fly belt areas, there are outfitters who offer Leopard hunts with dogs. Not considering the Leopard hunting method, what is going to be critical is Leopard shot placement, a wounded Leopard is a dangerous animal.
Setting off on a Leopard hunting adventure to Mozambique’s Niassa region is a journey that “dreams are made of”. Mozambique is mostly accessed via flights from Oliver Tambo International Airport in South Africa.
Depending on your departure and arrival times of international flights into South Africa, it may be required to overnight in Johannesburg before taking a flight to Pemba in Mozambique. Should this be a requirement, we would suggest African Sky Boutique Hotel who are conveniently situated nearby the Oliver Tambo International Airport. African Sky, also provides transfers to and from the airport and can assist with any rifle import permits before commencement of the hunting safari. For further information, see “Affiliated Services” below. We would recommend making use of Airlink for “local African flights” from South Africa to Pemba. Flights are on time, the snacks are great and importantly, they serve “adult beverages”.
From Pemba, hunters will have the option of either making use of a private air charter, or traveling by road transfer to the hunting concession.
One of the highlights of your stay is the exceptional dining experience. Each meal features the vibrant flavors of African cuisine, prepared with local ingredients and traditional methods, celebrating the region’s rich culinary heritage. Dining under the expansive African sky, with the warmth of a fire and the distant calls of wildlife, adds a touch of magic to your evenings.

The Mozambique hunting season runs from April 1st to November 30th. Preferred times for Leopard hunting is considered to be from April to August due to cooler weather and lower levels of rainfall. The wet season is also hotter, with higher levels of humidity and heavier rainfall. But, when it comes to a hunting safari in Niassa, there is no good or bad time, it is a privilege.
Lodges are luxurious and built from a combination of local materials, brick and motor with breathtaking views of the African landscape. Lodgings are comfortably furnished, in typical luxury styled safari tents with en-suite bathrooms and hot water.
The lodge features a central “boma” and fire pit, the prefect setting to enjoy a few “adult beverages” after a hard days hunting in Mozambique, while enjoy the sunsets that only Africa has to offer.
The minimum legal caliber for a dangerous game hunt in Mozambique is a .375 shooting a minimum weight of 300 grains. This caliber is prefect when Leopard hunting as shot placement is critical in order to drop the Leopard.
For bigger members of Africa’s big five, hunters prefer calibers like .404 Jeffery, .458 Lott, or even .470 NE /500 NE for greater stopping power.
