The Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer)

When it comes to Big 5 hunting in Africa, Tanzania is one of the premier destinations to consider. Home to all of Africa’s Big 5, Tanzania allows the hunting of four of these magnificent trophies, except for the Rhino.
Top of this list for many is the cunning, aggressive, and stubborn Cape Buffalo. It has earned its place in Africa’s Big 5 and is often regarded as one of Africa’s most dangerous animals to hunt. Some points worth considering when Cape Buffalo hunting:
• The Cape Buffalo is seen as being aggressive and unpredictable, and can become aggressive without warning should they feel threatened or if they are wounded.
• It is unforgiving of poor shot placement, as they are tough and resilient, and will not hesitate to charge and defend themselves. Added to that, the old saying goes that it takes one bullet to down a Buffalo, and another couple to convince it that it’s dead!
• These beasts are renowned for both their power and speed, reaching speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. When you have close to 2,000 pounds of thundering Buffalo (together with its sharp horns!) bearing down on you, you have a serious problem if you are in its path!
• Cape Buffalo possess a great sense of smell and hearing, and these, combined with their ability to camouflage themselves, make for a very challenging hunt.
• This hunting adversary is known to be extremely dangerous when wounded, and will often double back on the hunter, launching a surprise attack from behind. Be warned.

They are often referred to as “Africa’s Black Death” or “The Widow Maker” and are seen as one of Africa’s most dangerous and challenging animals to hunt.

Hunting in Tanzania, the Lunda Nkwambi GCA

• This large hunting block is renowned for its remoteness, natural beauty, array of wildlife, and diverse ecosystems.
• The Lunda Nkwambi GCA is more than 300,000 acres.
• It is situated in the western part of Tanzania and is less populated than other regions, making it the perfect region for hunters to enjoy an authentic African hunting safari.
• The area features a variety of landscapes, including woodlands, savannas, and river systems. These, in turn, support a wide range of habitats for a variety of both African plains game and dangerous game species.
• The area is home to many notable species, including members of Africa’s Big 5, as well as many antelope species. The area supports about 70% of the huntable species in Tanzania.
• The Lunda Nkwambi GCA is seen as being one of the best hunting blocks that Tanzania has to offer, with the overall hunting experience that it offers hunters in the region being exceptional. For hunters, it provides a memorable hunting experience, with the combination of its size, rich biodiversity, and relatively low human population all being major draw-cards.
• The area is also involved in several conservation efforts to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the area. These include structured conservation management through TAWA, community involvement in wildlife management, ongoing monitoring of wildlife populations, and various anti-poaching initiatives.

Game Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

The minimum of a .375 must be used when hunting dangerous game in Tanzania. Bow hunting of dangerous game is illegal, except for the Cape buffalo which may be hunted using a bow. The minimum legal requirement for Cape Buffalo hunting is a .375 caliber shooting a 300-grain bullet. With accurate shot placement, a well-placed bullet from a 416 Rigby, 404 Jeffery, 458 WM, or Lott will also bring down this strong bovine.
Double rifles such as the 470NE, 500NE, and up are preferred, especially when in close quarters with this dangerous adversary.
Hunting methods for Cape buffalo in Tanzania are generally the traditional walk-and-stalk, after initially utilizing a vehicle to cover large distances while glassing. Trackers will look for tracks (spoor), or signs that the buffalo have been through the area, or spotting of the actual herd itself.
From there onwards, the hunting party will proceed on foot, carefully using the terrain to their advantage as they slowly stalk this alert bovine until they are within striking range.

Tips when Dangerous Game Hunting in Tanzania

• Remain focused and alert, the bush is a very unpredictable environment where changes happen at the drop of a hat.
• Read up and know about the correct shot placement for your targeted species, to ensure a quick and humane death as well as an ethical hunt.
• Become acquainted with the hunting laws of the country, as well as the hunting area.
• Listen to your PH…what he says goes, no matter what. No hesitation, do as you are instructed to.
• Ensure all gear is in excellent condition and suited to the terrain and species you are targeting for this dangerous game hunt.
• Safety first, always. Once the animal is shot, do not approach immediately, and be ready with a follow-up shot should it be needed. Give the animal time and space before it tries one last time to attack.
