While many may think that there is not much more to Mauritius than sun and sand, the island is home to some exciting game hunting opportunities, including Rusa deer hunting and wild boar hunting.
Mauritian hunting grounds offer a variety of terrain, including sugar cane fields, mountainous forests, and wooded hills. Hunting in Mauritius is primarily to manage ecosystems and primarily targets invasive species, and remains a thrilling activity well worth considering.
This hunt in Mauritius covers two days of exciting safaris, Day 1 sees the hunter hunt a Rusa Stag <15 inches plus a yearling, while Day 2 includes a Rusa Stag 15-20 inches plus a Wild Boar! An observer on the hunt is also included in the package, to enjoy the experience with the hunter.
Rusa deer hunting in Mauritius is undertaken to control invasive species. These antelope were introduced to the area in the mid-1600s and thrived. Currently, it is estimated that there are more than 60,000 deer scattered across the island. Their preferred habitat includes dense forests and sugar cane plantations. These habitats provide the perfect cover to be able to adequately camouflage themselves from hunters.
These deer can be extremely testing to hunt, with their excellent sense of smell detecting hunters up to half a mile away. They can pinpoint sounds quite easily and are known for their good eyesight, which picks up movement in the area. They are extremely intelligent and apply avoidance tactics, such as freezing or slowly retreating, to avoid being captured.
Hunting methods include driven hunts, walk-and-stalk, spot-and-stalk, as well as hunting from a blind.
The only thing that is true about wild boar hunts is the fact that they are fast-paced, exciting, unpredictable, and a hunt you don’t want to miss out on!
The wild boar is extremely wary, and should it be concerned about threats or danger, it will flee, reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. Their chosen habitat of dense forests and sugar cane fields makes spotting them a challenge, while cornering these hogs is also not as simple as you might think, since they can clear 5 feet with ease and escape before your very eyes.
Wild boars can be hunted throughout the year in Mauritius.

A reminder to do your homework when it comes to shot placement on the Rusa deer, to ensure a quick death for the animal and an ethical hunt. Popular rifle options for this hunting safari include the .243, .270, .30-06, or 25-06 caliber options.
Wild boar hunting in Mauritius is a fast-paced and exciting safari. The shot placement should aim for a shoulder shot that will travel straight through the hog and destroy the heart, lungs, and shoulders, or aim for the heart and lungs for a quick, clean kill. Consider using a .243, .270, .30-06, or 25-06 caliber for this hog hunt.
