Game hunting in South Africa is available throughout the year, but the months of April – October are the most popular, as this is the drier season when the grass is shorter and the animals are more likely to be congregating around water holes.
For many, the Impala is one of the first targets of an African hunt. This medium antelope is targeted in many ways. Firstly, through ambushing the animal near water, using a blind. An alternate option is to stalk the herd when they are most active and grazing in the early morning or late afternoon. It is, however, quite tough to get within shooting range with so many sets of eyes and ears on alert, so hunters need to be extremely wary and careful not to be seen or heard.
Springbok hunting in South Africa is generally completed using the walk and stalk technique. This can be challenging to complete, as the Springbok is adept at camouflaging itself from predators and potential danger, you may just find yourself crawling through the grass.
The antelope makes a beautiful trophy and Gemsbok hunting in South Africa is extremely popular. Also known as the Oryx, the Gemsbok is usually hunted utilizing the walk-and-stalk approach. You need to cover a few miles a day in search of this prized trophy.
When it comes to a Blesbok hunting safari, the best time of the day to target the exquisite Blesbok is in the early morning or late afternoon when they are grazing in and around water. A hide can be set up near the water, allowing the hunter the perfect opportunity to take a great shot. The walk-and-stalk method is also often used, but with their superb senses on high alert, it is difficult to get close enough to easily identify a trophy ram, since both sexes have horns.
When Impala hunting, a .223 caliber could be used. With this size caliber there is little margin for error and shot placement on this hunt is critical. If you do not want to spend the entire day tracking a wounded Impala, a 7mm to the 30 caliber would be a better option.
Choose a flat shooting rifle with a decent caliber (i.e., 243 or .270) for your Springbok hunting expedition. The bullet tip needs to weigh not less than 120 grains and travel at 2600 feet per second. If meat damage is not a concern, a 308 or a 7mm is a suitable choice for the trophy springbok .
Two important factors when hunting the medium-sized Gemsbok: Good optics and premium quality bullets. A Gemsbok is an extremely tough antelope to target and a well-placed bullet from a .270 shooting 150 grain with a muzzle velocity of at least 2700 feet per second will get the job done. When hunting trophy Gemsbok, a larger caliber can also be considered, with any .30 caliber loaded with 165 grain to 180 being optical when Gemsbok hunting. These antelope are incredibly tough.
Blesbok tend to be quite skittish so this African hunt may well require some stalking. The best caliber for a Blesbok hunt ranges from a .243 to any of the thirty calibers fitted with a high-quality scope. 130 to 150 grain bullets are perfect.
