African Plains Game Hunting Methods

For both the Roan and the Sable, the experience of your professional hunter plays a significant role in identifying suitable targets based on trophy characteristics such as horn length and symmetry.

Both species prefer open savanna areas, with to water sources, which comes into play with the hunting methods to target these large antelope. Hunting antelope in South Africa is best done early in the morning or late afternoon, when they head to the water to drink and feed while temperatures are cool

Sable and Roan are hunted in a variety of methods, including:

  • Spot-and-stalk – Once spotted, they are very carefully stalked, until within range to take the shot.
  • Ambush techniques of setting up a hide near a waterhole that these animals are known to frequent.

Shot Placement

The Sable and Roan are both notorious for their wary natures, ensuring that patience is a must for the hunter.

These large antelopes also require careful shot placement (https://gamehuntingsafaris.com/shot-placement-for-hunting-large-antelope/), to ensure that the animal is taken down swiftly and ethically.

Do not choose anything less than a .270 caliber when hunting Sable and Roan, they are some of Africa’s toughest antelopes. Thirty calibers like a 30.06, or a well-placed shot from a .308 provide will get the job done. Choose a rifle that you are familiar with and that you can confidently manage. It is also important to be aware of how varied distances will affect the trajectory of the bullet.

When is the best time for Game Hunting in South Africa?

While hunting in South Africa takes place throughout the year, the cooler and drier months are preferred, with the months from April to late October being more popular. These drier months also allow hunters to target their hunting trophies more easily, as the grass is shorter and bushveld less dense, allowing hunters to spot their prey more easily.

Hunting in the Northwest province is a sought-after activity for hunters, with the province consisting of flat areas, scattered trees, and grassland, just the perfect topography and habitat for plains game trophies.

Traveling to the South African Hunting Grounds

OR Tambo International in Johannesburg will be the arrival point for hunters, with a road transfer to the hunting grounds in the Northwest Province taking approximately 2.5 hours.

To import a firearm, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form.

International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Jacques, proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).

South Africa is renowned for its exceptional African plains game hunting options, and this hunting safari in a concession with 45 species will not disappoint.
