African Plains Game Hunting Methods

For both Roan and Sable, experienced guides play a significant role in identifying suitable targets based on trophy characteristics such as horn length and symmetry.

Both species prefer habitats of open savannas and access to water sources, which comes into play with the hunting methods to target these large African plains game trophies. Hunting these antelopes is best done early in the morning or late afternoon, when they head to the water to drink.

These antelopes are hunted in a variety of methods, including:

  • Spot-and-stalk – Once spotted, they are very carefully stalked, until within range to take the shot.
  • Ambush techniques of setting up a hide near a waterhole that these animals are known to frequent.

Shot Placement

Both Roan and Sable are renowned for their wary natures, so patience and perseverance are called for on the part of the hunter not to want to rush the hunting safari or scare the antelope.

These large antelopes also require careful shot placement, to ensure that the animal is taken down swiftly and ethically. They are extremely tough.

In terms of firepower when Sable hunting in South Africa, do not choose anything less than a .270 caliber. Thirty calibers like a 30.06, or a well-placed shot from a .308 provide more than enough kinetic energy to bring down this antelope. Bigger calibers loaded with solids, such as a .375 work extremely well. If the shots are going to be further in distance, a 7mm or 300-win mag should be considered.

When it comes to choosing a rifle to hunt Roan, the best caliber with which to hunt this large African plains game trophy antelope is going to be the rifle you know best and are most comfortable with. Any caliber, from a well-placed .243 bullet to a .375 (with solids) will get the job done. A 7mm and 300-win mag, while traveling much faster are also good choices. Choose the rifle you know best where you are confident that accurate shot placement is a certainty.

When is the best time to Hunt in South Africa?

Hunting takes place all year around, however the cooler and drier months are preferred, which extend from April to late October. These drier months also allow hunters to target their game hunting trophies more easily, as the grass is shorter and bushveld less dense, allowing hunters to spot the prey more easily.

Traveling to the South African Hunting Grounds

International inbound flights will see hunters landing at Oliver Tambo International Airport, in Johannesburg. A regional flight needs to be taken to Kimberly from OR Tambo, with Airlink being recommended for this flight route as it is not only affordable (US$150 to US$200 return), but also professional, on time and equipped to safely transport firearms.

To import a firearm, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form.

International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Werner and team, proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).

Africa Sky Boutique is highly recommended for those needing to spend a night in Johannesburg, with the team from the hotel assisting with transfers both from and to OR Tambo International. They can also deal with all rifle import permits and obtain pre-clearance approvals, thus avoiding delays.

A better destination for African plains game hunts will be difficult to find, with the 7,000 acre concession in the Free State being inhabited by a large variety of species, stunning landscapes, and an experienced team to guide your hunt.

If you want to hunt beautiful African plains game trophies in breathtaking scenery, in an exciting hunting environment, this hunt is for you!
