Zimbabwe, with its natural beauty and wildlife is one of Africa’s premium game hunting destinations, offering international hunters an authentic “free-range” African hunting safari. For centuries Zimbabwe has attracted international hunters and explorers such as the famous explorer, Doctor Livingston, who travelled the country documenting the diverse variety of wildlife and natural wonders. Zimabbwe produces top quality big five trophies, especially Leopard, Lion, Cape Buffalo and Elephant.
Whether hunters are hunting the Zambezi Valley, Lake Kariba, Save Valley Conservancy or the Hwange districts, hunting in Zimbabwe offers an unforgettable adventure. The Gache Gache region and Lake Kariba offer prime hunting opportunities for Giant Crocodiles and Hippo, both species requiring specific hunting methods.
Many big game hunters have a goal of taking not only Africa’s big five dangerous animals, but also Hippos and Crocodiles, seeking to successfully hunt the dangerous 7.
Most hunters do not start their dangerous game hunting safaris with a Hippo hunt, but many will arrive at the decision later in their careers. This decision is normally made when it is realized that a Hippo hunt is not only fun, but Hippos are exceptionally dangerous. Hippos in fact kill more than five hundred people a year in Africa, compared to Lions at approximately twenty.
Hippo hunting is exceptionally dangerous, whether the Hippo be in or out of the water. Bull Hippos are well-known for attacking fishing boats and or people who get too close, or between their feeding grounds and water. A bite from the ivory tusks of a Hippo can instantly kill a man.
Lake Kariba is the world’s largest artificial lake by volume and was filled between 1958 and 1963. Kariba boasts a length of more than 135 miles and a width exceeding 25 miles in certain areas. It is so big, that the Lake feels more like an ocean. Kariba has many islands, including Maaze, Mashape and Chete and provides electric power to Zambia and Zimbabwe. Lake Kariba is often referred to as Zimbabwe’s undiscovered Riviera, boasting spectacular views, sunsets, and incredible “Aquatic” hunting safaris. Weather is mostly warm and summer, but can get hot during the summer months from December through to February.
The lake is teaming with bird life including Fish Eagles and Cormorants. Dangerous game animals such as Elephants, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, and Cape Buffalo patrol the shorelines. Game-fish, specifically Tiger fish which were indigenous to the Zambezi River system thrive on Kapenta which were introduced to Lake Kariba. Estimates suggest that more than 10 000 Crocodiles reside in the waterways of Lake Kariba, and between 5000 and 6000 Hippo’s. On Lake Kariba, you will find the perfect Hippo trophy, old, grump and covered in battle scars.
Sijarira is a forestry area and is untamed Africa like hundreds of years ago. It is one of Zimbabwe’s most rugged concessions offering a wide variety of hunting and fishing. Hunting is mainly by boat, vehicle or on foot. Being hilly and remote country, the area is not well developed in terms of roads. Sijarira has high numbers of game and offers hunters the best Hippo hunting in the world, bordering Lake Kariba for more than twenty-five miles.
If you want a Bull Hippo on display in your trophy room and want to hunt an area famous for producing enormous bulls at a great price, this is the hunt that you have been looking for.
Hippo Hunts on Lake Kariba mostly use boats for transportation and the Hippo stalks will be conducted along the shorelines of Kariba. Your dangerous game professional hunter will be highly experienced and is very familiar with the waterways, shorelines and estuaries.
As the trophy Hippo may be taken on land or in the water, an in-depth understanding of Hippo Shot Placement is critical. A well-placed bullet into the brain will see the Hippo quietly slide under the water, ensuring a quick and humane kill. Hunters will have to patiently wait for the decomposition gasses in the stomach to ensure the Hippo floats to the surface. This process can take between an hour or four hours.
The Sijarira area offers some of the finest Hippo hunting in Africa and as such, Quota is limited.
Hunting Hippo in Zimbabwe requires adherence to regulations, hunting permits and licenses.
