Limpopo is often referred to as the “Hunting Mecca” of South Africa. The name Limpopo stemmed after the famous Limpopo River forming the border between Zimbabwe and Botswana. This hunting area in South Africa is split into two main areas, the “Lowveld” in the East joining the Kruger Park, famous for dangerous game hunts including Elephant, Hippo and Crocodile. The Lowveld region is also popular for Spotted Hyena hunts, along with night critters such as Honey Badgers, Civets, Genet’s and Porcupine.
The Western bush veld region of Limpopo has the highest concentration of game ranches in South Africa. Travelling between all the cities and smaller towns, miles of high fenced ares can be seen. Ranches have been game breeding and focusing on improving animal genetics, which over the years has resulted in a success story for conservation. Years of sustained game ranching efforts has led to South Africa’s conservation success story. More animals and bigger trophies!!
The Limpopo is packed with species such as Kudu (greater), Sable, Cape Buffalo and rarer species such as Tsessebe and Roan.
SA, especially the Limpopo Province boasts an incredible amount of huntable species, unequaled anywhere else in Africa. Decades ago, a couple of species were in trouble for various reasons. With the concept of private ownership of game which stemmed from Dutch laws, if a fence was erected, all the animals on the property belonged too the rancher. Antelope species that “were in trouble”, quickly bounced back.
Animal numbers in Limpopo grew exponentially due to anti-poaching initiates, supplementary feeding and breeding projects and continue to grow every year. On any commercial hunting ranch, the abundance of plains game is astonishing, you never know what is around the corner, or next waterhole or mountain.
When hunting in Limpopo, be warned!! International hunters tend to go home with more trophies that were “original on the list”.
The traditional “walk and stalk”, encouraging principles of fair chase are made use of in Limpopo. Hunters will glass, spot animals for afar and the stalk to withing shooting distance. Other methods include “hunting from a blind” for hunters with a disability, or for bow/cross bow hunters. On certain private ranches, vehicles are also used to cover more territory.

Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days, literally placing a “damper” on the hunting safari.
To import a firearm into South Africa for the purpose of Sport Hunting, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form. International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Wesley and proof of ownership.
