South Africa is not regulated with regards to a specific hunting season and hunting can take place all year round. The cooler months, which run from April to October are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are just to high which can make hunting even more of a challenge. The months of November through to February are also the rainy season. Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days, literally placing a “damper” on the hunting safari.
The Aoudad Ram (Barbary Sheep) is a master of rugged terrain. Found in rocky outcrops and steep hillsides, their keen senses and agility make them very difficult to approach. Once you have successfully harvested this animal, you will be adding an impressive addition to your trophy room.
Hunting Springbuck across the vast and open plains will test your long-range shooting skills. Their speed and alertness make them quick to flee at the slightest hint of danger. You and your professional hunter will identify a suitable target, and spot and stalk to get into shooting position.
Each of these hunts offers its own unique excitement and challenge, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Free State’s diverse landscapes.
To import a firearm into South Africa for the purpose of Sport Hunting, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form. International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Wesley and proof of ownership. (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
Springbok are adept at camouflaging themselves. It can be difficult to identify a suitable trophy as both the male and female have horns, but females are larger than males. It can be difficult to identify a suitable trophy because both sexes have horns, and females are larger than males. Trophy measurement is calculated by the length of their horns. On a Springbuck hunt, anything larger than 12 inches is classified as a trophy, 15 inches being “a tank of a Springbuck.”
Hitting vitals at such long ranges can also be a challenge. Use good quality long range binoculars for spotting and keep the wind in your face so not to “spook” the Springbuck by picking up your scent.
When long range Springbuck hunting, use a minimum caliber of .25 inches (6.35 mm). We at GHS prefer to use larger calibers such as a 7mm, which shoots a flat trajectory over a long distance. Whichever rife you choose, only use premium grade ammunition.
This hunting concession does not fall into a African malaria area and as such no preventative medication needs to be taken. Before any safari in Africa, ensuring your Tetanus shot is up to date is recommended. South Africa does experience high UV indexes, so use sun screen and stay hydrated.
