About Hunting in the North West Province, South Africa

Hunting in the North West province of South Africa offers hunters fantastic plains game hunting opportunities with an exceptional variety.

Known as the platinum province due to the amount of platinum mines, topography ranges from the remnants of the Kalahari Desert to the High-veld plateau, uniquely resembling both the Limpopo Province and Kalahari region of South Africa. The biosphere is thus adapted to offer a diverse range of hunting opportunities, including dangerous game hunts on some of the larger ranches.

Both high-veld and low-veld species can be found in the area, saving international hunters travel time. Game hunting opportunities include plains game, exotic antelope and a variety of “night hunting safaris” for Aardwolf, Brown Hyena, Civets and Bat-Eared Foxes (Cites permits are required for some of the species). Certain ranches only focus on bow-hunting and as such do not offer rifle/black powder hunting.

The North West Province in South Africa is also a favorite location for tourist activities including Sun City Resort/Casino, Palace of the lost City, Big Five Reserves and visits to cultural villages.

7 x Days of Adventure: The African Hunting Safari

Stepping into the wilds of North West Province South Africa, for a 7-day African hunting safari is a dream come true for many game hunting enthusiasts. Set in the picturesque Rustenburg region, this hunting adventure offers a chance to engage in the exhilarating pursuit of African plains game.

Zebra Hunting
Zebra Hunting

Hunting a Common Blesbok or a Springbok are idea for “first blood” hunters, offering manageable challenges that will help you hone your skills. The Impala, with its agility and speed, offers a dynamic hunting experience, while Warthog, with its tough demeanor, presents a different kind of challenge.

As the hunting adventure continues, you will have the opportunity to hunt either a Blue Wildebeest or a Zebra. These larger animals require a combination of patience and precision. The walk-and-stalk hunting method is a challenge as you navigate through the diverse terrain. Successfully taking down one of these majestic creatures will not only test your abilities but also enhance your reputation as an avid hunter.

Red Hartebeest and Gemsbok, both of which are larger antelope. The Gemsbok, with its striking horns, offers a true test of your shot placement skills. These are tough African plains game antelope.

Non-Hunting Excursions can be arranged at an additional cost, Including, but not limited to:

  •  Predator Park: Interact with Lion and Cheetah cubs up close and personal.
  •  Elephant Sanctuary: Personal interaction with your own Elephant while doing game viewing via Elephant back rides.
  •  A day trip to the Pilansberg National Park: Your best opportunity to view and photograph the BIG 5 via a vehicle game drive.
  •  Zip Line / Canopy Tours: A highlight to both adventurers and spectators, enjoying refreshments at the highest platform with its breath-taking
     view of the surroundings.

Plains Game Hunting Method

This plains game hunt is in typical African safari style using the “walk and stalk” method. A safari truck may be made use of to move around and cover “more miles”.  The hunting grounds in the North West Province are a combination of hilly, mountainous and open grass land areas. Due to supplementary feeding of antelope, the hunting concessions are popular for bow hunting safaris.

Hunters can also follow the “ambush method” of plains game hunting by camouflaging themselves along frequently used game trails and strategic vantage points.

Traveling for the Hunting Safari

Nothing beats the excitement of an African hunting adventure! Arriving at Johannesburg’s Oliver Tambo International Airport. You will be met by Patrick, or a member of his team, who will assist with any rifle collections and “meet and greet”. Transport from Oliver Tambo to the hunting lodge in the North West will be by road transfer, and takes approximately two hours through rolling hills and tranquil valleys, covering a distance of approximately one hundred miles.

Depending on your departure and arrival times of international flights into South Africa, it may be required to overnight in Johannesburg. Should this be a requirement, we would suggest African Sky Boutique Hotel who are conveniently situated nearby the airport. African Sky, also provides transfers to and from the airport and can assist with any rifle import permits before commencement of the hunting safari. For further information, see “Affiliated Services” below.

Rifle Permits for the Plains Game Hunt in South Africa

To apply for a temporary import permit for sport hunting a SAPS 520 form will need to be completed. You will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Patrick and proof of ownership (Firearm License or Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).

The temporary import permit allows for hunters to bring a maximum of four rifles, with neither two being the same caliber. No more than 200 rounds of ammunition per caliber.

Rifle Calibers Game Hunting

On this plains game hunt,  medium to large sized antelope, all offer unique hunting challenges. You may spot a Warthog on the savanna or at a water source at 80 yards, or a Blue Wildebeest at 150 yards. Who can say no to a Kudu Bull on a ridge at 200 yards?

A thirty caliber rifle such as 30.06 or .308, South Africa ” all rounders” will get the job done. A .270 or 300 Win Mag, loaded with quality expanding tips, shooting a flat trajectory will get the job done. Like with all plains game hunts in South Africa, it is not always about the rifle and caliber, but more importantly shot placement.

Plains Game Hunting Season in South Africa

Outfitters and ranch owners hunting throughout the year are in possession of “P3 Exemption Permits” The cooler months, which run from April to October, are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are high and can exceed 10 Fahrenheit. The drier months see the grasses being shorter in the veld, and the bush veld not as dense, both of which allow hunters to more easily spot potential Sable trophies and management animals.

From early December to February, these months  are known as the “wet season” in Limpopo. Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days.  The preferred plains game hunting safari would take place between March and November.
