For many years, Botswana was one of the top trophy hunting destinations in Southern Africa, showcasing incredible populations of game such as Elephant, Lions and Leopards, including Cape Buffalo, Aka “Africa’s Black Death”. Botswana also boasted a wide variety of African plains game. These antelope inhabited Botswana from the Okavango Delta to the scenic and magical Kalahari Desert.
In 2013, the Botswana government issued a ban on all hunting activities on government and community lands, but fortunately in line with conservation principles the ban was lifted in recent years. Botswana is home to more free-range wild Elephant than any other country in Africa, with Zimbabwe a close second. Botswana is famous for producing big cats, with only 130 tags being issued by CITES every year.
Hunting areas are open concessions and there will be no fences in sight, spanning more than 3,4 million acres. NG4 and NG5 hunting areas are two adjacent blocks, situated in the heart of Bushmanland, on the eastern side of Namibia. Bushmanland is world renowned for community based big game hunting on popular migratory routes.
Most of the terrain is flat, coupled with poor sandy conditions and limited explorable minerals. Due to the dry climate, the area is not suitable for commercial farming, thus making big game hunting the largest generator of foreign revenue.
The Aha Hills is located on NG 4, as well as the Gcwiahaba valley are some of the wildest and most remote areas in Botswana. Gcwiahaba hides a labyrinth of underground caverns and passages, with thousands of bats such as the Commerson’s Leaf-nosed Bat. Visitors will find stalagmite, stalactite and flow-stone formations.
There are rocky outcrops spread throughout the entire concession, with natural springs securing permanent water throughout the year. Natural Pans filled with rainwater which typically lasts well into the hunting season.
Good news for Bow Hunters wanting a dangerous game hunt in Botswana, Cape Buffalo are legally allowed to be hunted with a bow.
Hunting in Botswana is highly regulated and the hunting season in Botswana runs from April to September, which are also the cooler months. In summer, the temperatures are high, which cause an influx of critters such as insects, ticks, and mosquitoes. The best time to hunt Buffalo in Botswana is from 1st June to 30th September)

Botswana is an excellent choice for hunters seeking a well-organized hunting safari, and including plains game adds versatility to the safari.
A typical day Buffalo hunting in Botswana will be starting the day with an early breakfast and heading out early to look for fresh tracks. A 4 x 4 safari truck may be used to cover more ground due to the sheer size of blocks NG4 and NG5. Your professional hunter will coordinate the day’s activities, depending on the day’s objectives.
Once fresh Buffalo tracks have been found along game trails or near waterholes following their nocturnal movements, the stalk will begin. Patience and skilled marksmanship will be critical as the final approach to twenty or thirty yards is very close to these powerful animals. Understanding Buffalo shot placement and anatomy is important. A wounded Buffalo is exceptionally dangerous and are known to circle behind hunters.
While the legal minimum for Buffalo hunting in Botswana is a .375, a .404, .458 and .458 Lott will work well. At close quarters, a double rifle with stopping power, such as a 500/600 Nitro Express will get the job done. A Cape Buffalo hunt is only over, when he is “in the salt”. It’s the dead Buffalo that kill you.
International hunters will into the city of Maun. Maun can be reached by regional flight from Oliver Tambo International Airport, flying from South Africa. This flight is approximately two hours in duration. For this regional flight, we would recommend Airlink.
The flights are on time, affordable and the food is great. Should hunters need to stay overnight in Johannesburg, we would recommend making use of Africa Sky Boutique Hotel, who offer transfers to/from Oliver Tambo and can assist with firearm permits into South Africa (SAPS 520). For further information, see “Affiliate Services” below.
Should you wish to charter a Helicopter or light aircraft, this can be arranged. The road transfer from Maun to the hunting lodge will take approximately four hours.
Accommodations in the remote areas of NG4 and NG5 will consist of safari tent accommodation, an “old style” camp set up in the bush, yet still very luxurious.
You can expect fine dining at night after a hard day’s work to find your trophy Buffalo. Facilities: En-suit bathroom, outdoor shower, fridge and daily laundry.
