Cape Buffalo Cows are cunning and wise and are known to outsmart hunters and predators. Hunters can easily become the hunted.
A wounded Buffalo Cow in the long grass is an extremely dangerous opponent. A Buffalo in charge is going to come at you like a freight train, at more than 35 miles an hour. Buffalo show no emotion or behavior change before a charge,
The Cape Buffalo Cow is an exceptionally tough member of the African big 5. Poorly hit, Cape Buffalo are incredibly difficult to stop. Social media platforms are forever posting Cape Buffalo charges. Professional hunters who did not bring their “A” game on the day, have either moved on, or have battle scars as a daily reminder of just how lucky they were.
As they say, it takes one bullet to kill a Cape Buffalo, and another good few to convince them of the fact.
Buffalo shot placement is all about anchoring the animal. Head shots will be avoided unless the buffalo is in full charge. The preferred shot would be a third of the way up the shoulder, into the vitals, immediately followed up by a few more well-placed bullets ensuring that the Buffalo is anchored and indeed dead.
On a Buffalo cow hunt, we at Game Hunting Safaris are firm believers that there can never be too much gun. As much as shot placement is always a critical factor, the hunter needs a rifle with stopping power.
A .375 loaded with decent quality 300 grain bullets is the minimum legal requirement when dangerous game hunting in South Africa. But bigger caliber rifles such as a .458, .458 Lott, .404, .416 are also recommended along with any big double.
When making your choice of what rifle to bring, as a rule of thumb bring the biggest caliber that you can accurately shoot and handle with confidence.
International inbound flights will see hunters landing at Oliver Tambo International Airport. From OR Tambo, a regional flight needs to be taken to Kimberly. Airlink is recommended for regional flights as the airline is affordable (US$150 to US$200 return), professional and on time. Airlink also is equipped to safely transport firearms.
In order to import your firearm you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form International hunters importing their firearms will need copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Werner and team, proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
If you are planning to overnight in Johannesburg, see our list of affiliate services below. Africa Sky Boutique is highly recommended. Their team can assist with transfers to and from Oliver Tambo, as well as deal with all rifle import permits and obtain pre-clearance approvals avoiding delays at point of entry.
