The Limpopo Province, named after the Limpopo River which forms the border between South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The Western region offers a wide variety of scenic landscapes with incredible natural biodiversity. Topography includes valleys and plains, with iconic mountain ranges such as the Soutpansberg and Waterberg mountain ranges. The Limpopo province is also home to the worlds largest and oldest Baobab tree.
Limpopo is referred to a “The Hunting Mecca” of South Africa, attracting more sports hunters than any other region of the country. More than 80% of South Africa’s private hunting and game breeding ranches are situated in the Limpopo Province. High fenced sustainable ranching and game management has led to improved genetics, bigger trophies and has contributed to South Africa’s conservation success story. The famous Mapungubwe Nature Reserve and the northern part of the Kruger National Park are also situated in Limpopo and numerous day trips can be arranged for non-hunting companions on the safari.
In this this brush, know that the Cape Buffalo Cow hunt is going to be “up close and personal”, in the “thick stuff”.
This Cape Buffalo cow hunt will be done on foot, following the traditional principles of fair chase. This is truly a dangerous game hunting safari. These Buffalo cows will be found “the thick stuff”, surrounded by other Buffalo in the herd, making this hunt even more dangerous.
Johan and his team of trackers will work hard to find your Buffalo.
Cape Buffalo cows are cunning and wise. Buffalo are known to avoid and outsmart hunters. A charging Buffalo is going to come at you like a freight train, at more than thirty-five miles an hour. A Buffalo Bull shows no emotion or behavior change before a charge. Bring enough gun!! A Buffalo cow is no less dangerous to hunt. The world record Cape Buffalo is in fact a Cow!!
Arriving at Johannesburg’s Oliver Tambo International Airport, you will be met by Patrick, or a member of his team, who will assist with any rifle collections and “meet and greet”. Transport from Oliver Tambo will be by road to the hunting lodge in Limpopo Province, and will take approximately three hours. Traveling through rolling hills and tranquil valleys, the road transfer is approximately one hundred and fifty miles.
Depending on your departure and arrival times of international flights into South Africa, it may be required to overnight in Johannesburg. Should this be a requirement, we would suggest African Sky Boutique Hotel who are conveniently situated nearby the airport. African Sky, also provides transfers to and from the airport and can assist with any rifle import permits before commencement of the hunting safari. For further information, see “Affiliated Services“ below.
The Cape Buffalo hunt (even a cow) is undoubtedly one of the most exhilarating experiences you can possibly have. Known for their unpredictable nature and sheer power, Cape Buffalo are a formidable opponent. The challenge lies in getting close enough to make the shot. Buffalo cows tend to be in herds, making the hunt even more dangerous. Shot placement is critical as a wounded Cape Buffalo Cow is a dangerous animal..
Kudu hunting in South Africa presents its own set of challenges. These majestic animals, referred to as the “Gray Ghosts” of Africa, are masters of camouflage. Their ability to blend into the dense bush and their acute senses makes hunting a Kudu a true test of patience and skill.
Hunting a Waterbuck in thick brush is no easy feat, either. Their strong, musky scent often gives away their presence, but their keen senses and agility make them a challenging target.
The Zebra, with its striking black-and-white stripes, may seem an easier target, but don’t be fooled. Their strength and speed make them a challenging addition to any Plains Game Hunting in Africa experience. The Blue Wildebeest, often referred to as the “poor man’s buffalo,” offers a rugged and wild hunt. Known for their endurance and resilience, these animals are a test of stamina for any hunter. Blue Wildebeest are exceptionally tough.
Impala, often seen as the “bread and butter” of a plains game hunt in South Africa, though more abundant, they are quick and can be surprisingly elusive. An Impala hunt is a great way to sharpen your skills and is essential in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
In addition to these main targets, you’ll also have the opportunity to hunt four cull animals, which is essential for managing wildlife population sustainably. The inclusion of a trip to Kruger National Park rounds out the experience, offering a chance to see Africa’s Big Five in their natural habitat, further deepening your connection to this incredible land.
