Arriving at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, hunters will need to take a domestic flight from Johannesburg to Kimberley Airport, marking the start of your African hunting adventure. Return flights to/from Kimberly cost on average US$ 200, depending on the season and take an hour and fifteen minutes travel time.

Depending on the arrival time of the inbound flight into Johannesburg, a overnight stay in Jhb may be needed before embarking on the domestic flight to Kimberly. Cape Buffalo Hunting in South Africa

South Africa is an excellent choice for hunters seeking a well-organized Buffalo hunt, and including a trophy Sable hunt adds versatility to the safari.  

A typical day hunting in South Africa will be starting the day with an early breakfast and heading out early to look for fresh tracks. With this five-star ranch being over 33 000 acres, a 4 x 4 safari truck may be used to cover more ground. With this hunt including both Cape Buffalo and Sable, your professional hunter will coordinate the day’s activities, depending on the day’s objectives.

Once fresh Buffalo tracks have been found along game trails or near waterholes following their nocturnal movements, the stalk will begin.  Patience and skilled marksmanship will be critical as the final approach to twenty or thirty yards is very close to these powerful animals. Understanding Buffalo shot placement and anatomy is important. A wounded Buffalo is exceptionally dangerous and are known to circle behind hunters.

While the legal minimum for Buffalo hunting in South Africa is a .375, a .404, .458 and .458 Lott will well. At close quarters, a double rifle with stopping power, such as a 500/600 Nitro Express will get the job done. A Cape Buffalo hunt is only over, when he is “in the salt”.

• Be aware of your surroundings and be vigilant, Cape Buffalo are known to unexpectedly charge.
• Use the correct equipment and thoroughly test before the hunt.
• Use quality soft expanding tips for the first shot and switch to solids that can penetrate for the follow up shots.
• Avoid neck and head shots.
• Understand herd dynamics and Cape Buffalo behavior.

When is the best time to go hunting in South Africa?

While South Africa has a regulated hunting season, ranch owners in possession of a P3 Exemption certificate may hunt throughout the year. The best time to hunt in South Africa, is from April to October being the cooler and drier months.

In the winter months, there is less vegetation which improves visibility and general hunting conditions. In the summer months, temperatures can exceed 104 Fahrenheit which can be really unpleasant.

Hunting in South Africa and Firearm Permits

Travelers embarking on a hunting safari in South Africa need to obtain a copy of the SAPS 520 form in advance to streamline the process on arrival.
