The Selous, (now Nyerere) was named after the famous soldier and big game hunter, Frederick Courteney Selous. The reserve spans an area in excess of 19 000 square miles, plus “buffer zones” contributing to the sheer size. Due to the vast wilderness and high levels of biodiversity in the area, in 1982 the Selous was named a World Heritage Site.
The Selous consists of undisturbed natural landscapes, including grasslands and the Miombo Woodlands habitat. The Selous is home to Africa’s most iconic species, including all of Africa’s dangerous 7. While the reserve is broken into hunting blocks, human habitation is not allowed due to the sensitivity of many of the ecosystems.

Leopards are known to be shy, illusive and a challenge to hunt. Outwitting these incredible cats is a perplexing task. Success rates depend on many factors, many which are out of the control of the hunter and team.
While Leopards can be hunted throughout Tanzania, the Selous has the highest concentration of Leopards due to the availability of prey species. Using trail cams has made Leopard hunting methods such as baiting a little easier, and assists in estimating age, sex, and trophy size.
Leopard hunts for “Mr Spots” can only take place during day light hours. Leopards are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and as such a CITES permit is required.
Leopard Trophy: A minimum length is 1,5 meters (4 feet 11 inches) from tip of the nose to tip of the tail.
When hunting the Selous in Tanzania, adding a trophy Cape Buffalo is a strong “must” and this area produces exceptional quality Bulls, in excess of 46 inches is very possible. Bigger bulls are regularly known to be taken. Herds of more than a hundred are common. “Dugga Boys” are known to be extremely cantankerous, only getting worse with age. A Cites permit is not required when Buffalo hunting in Tanzania. When hunting Cape Buffalo, these animals need to be treated with great respect, even more so when wounded. A Cape Buffalo is only classified as dead when he is “in the salt”.
