The Matetsi ECA area in Zimbabwe is one of the largest game hunting complexes and covers an area of more than 50 000 acres, 250 square miles. The Matetsi Extended Conservation Area (ECA) is was formed by merging several game ranches that were open and unfenced to each other, creating a larger safari hunting area beyond the boundaries of the original Matetsi Units.
The Matetsi was named after the Matetsi River (named for the blue-green algae found on the rocks) which flows through the southern hunting area. Concessions in this area are famous for Big Five hunts and are also well known for the large populations of Sable.
The Flora is characterized by diverse trees like the Albida which provides food for plains game animals such as Giraffe, Kudu, Impala, Zebra, and other herbivores. Topography is 60% plains and 20% rolling hills.

The Nile Crocodile is known for its strength and power making it a covered trophy amongst big game hunters.
Crocodiles are opportunistic hunters and in Africa, more than a thousand people are killed every year, more than any other African big five animal.
While the Nile Crocodile is not listed under Cites as endangered, other African Crocodile species are listed as threatened. An adult bull Crocodile can range in size from between twelve and sometimes more than sixteen feet, plus weigh in at over 2200 pounds.
Crocodiles can live to over eighty years and are found in as many as twenty-six African countries.
Nile Crocodiles are found throughout the waterways, rivers and marsh areas in Matetsi, this concession has plenty of big Crocodiles.
Once a suitable trophy is identified, you will slowly stalk to within shooting distance, which can range from between thirty yards to one hundred yards, depending on the terrain and topography. With a Crocodile having such acute senses, approaching the Crocodile undetected is a lot more challenging than many hunters realize.
Crocodiles have incredible vision, hearing and smell and can detect vibration in the ground through specialized sensory organs on their skin called “integumentary sensory organs”. The possibility of a stalk in your socks or bare feet is real.
Crocodile Shot Placement, requires extensive research and spending a few hours mastering the options is recommended.
Many hunters have lost their prized trophy due to a poorly placed shot. This Apex predator is a perfectly designed killing machine with a prehistoric golf ball sized brain focused purely on one thing: death and he is not too particular as to where the next meal comes from. A well-placed bullet needs to penetrate the brain and a second follow up directly into the spine. A third follow up bullet then needs to enter the vital organs.
A misplaced shot could see your trophy Crocodile sliding back into the marshes, making a follow up, or recovery of the trophy exceptionally difficult, if not impossible.
Depending on how many days are available following your Crocodile hunt, additional plains game species are available as per the below additional trophy costs: A few of the favourites in the Matetsi are:
