An Elephant hunt in Zambia! This statement alone ticks all the right boxes.
When pondering the idea of hunting in Africa, more specifically Elephant hunting, the mind immediately goes back to thoughts of the big five legendary hunters who traversed the African continent; Frederick C Selous, Walter Bell and so many more.
How many times have we hunters imagined going back in time and following in the footsteps of the legends, hunting “old Africa” following Africa’s oldest traditions?

A hunt in Zambia, is a hunt quite like no other. Zambia is untamed!!
Calculating hunting costs for Zambia is always complex with additional Government fees, hunting Licenses etc.
Hunters often get “caught” with “surprises” at the end of a safari in Zambia due to reluctance, or misrepresentation by certain marketers to fully disclose the detail.
Safari hunting in Zambia comes at higher cost compared to other African countries such as South Africa by way of example, but every additional Dollar hunting in Zambia is well spent.
There are many attributable factors, but a sample of the main reasons of the scaled-up price is the short hunting season (fewer hunters, less cash flow), Government levies, high operational costs in operating from remote bush camps and of course transfers into these areas.
It is due to the ongoing commitment, dedication and contributions made by hunters that we can ensure that our wildlife populations are well managed and protected for generations to come.
Zambia is an enormous country, larger than the state of Texas in the USA measuring in at over 290 000 square miles and is packed with African game animals.

Trophy Elephant Hunting in Africa is definitely one of the greatest and most memorable African hunts that can ever be undertaken by those hunters who are willing and able to take on these incredibly dangerous animals.
This Elephant hunt will take place in the Rufunsa GMA which is situated in the lower Zambezi Valley of Zambia. This remarkable concession borders the Zambezi National Park and across the river from the renowned Chewore Safari Area of Zimbabwe.
Zambia is renowned for unfenced and free-range African safaris and is a paradise for those hunters pursing Africa’s dangerous 7 animals. Zambia also boasts an impressive list of plains game antelope and specialty animals.
Rufunsa GMA is more than 2000 square miles in size, which is huge. Habitat and typical African vegetation is Mopani woodland and thick Jesse bush, perfect for dangerous game hunts.
Not only is Rufunsa geared for African big 5, but this dense vegetation and areas of open savannah delivers quality plains game antelope. This area has high population densities of Kudu, Bushbuck, Sharpes Grysbok, Eland and of course big Lions and Leopards.
Being situated on the confluence of the Zambezi and Luangwa River, Rufunsa is packed with Hippo and giant Nile Crocodiles. Hippo and Crocodile hunts are immensely popular with the Zambezi River producing monster Croc’s at over 16feet, snout to tail.
There are thousands of Crocodile in the Zambezi waterways and population estimates are over 150 000 to 200 000 Crocodile’s in Zambia.
A Crocodile hunt can be added to the safari for an additional trophy fee of US$ 4000 and a Trophy Hippo hunt for a fee of US$4200.
Situated on the Zambezi, catch and release Tiger Fishing safaris are available producing absolute giants. It may be well worth your while to consider extending the Elephant hunt and add on a few days of rest and relaxation for some Tiger fishing.
Zambia has a history of producing big Cape Buffalo trophies with spreads of over 44 inches tip to tip. Rufunsa has healthy populations of old and mean Dagga Boys who are always ready for a fight.
A Cape Buffalo hunt can be added to this safari for a trophy fee of US$ 4500. For those hunters up for the challenge, a second Cape Buffalo can be hunted on this ten-day Elephant hunt for US$ 6800.
This African outfitter has a wealth of game hunting experience and operates in numerous territories within Zambia. As can be expecting when hunting in Zambia, outfitters only hunt free-range game and follow the traditional principals and methods of “fair chase” and ethical hunting.
This outfitter in addition to Rufunsa GMA hunts the areas of South Luangwa, Bangweulu Swamps and Kafue GMAs for species such as Cooksons Wildebeest, Defassa Waterbuck, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Sitatunga and of course the Kafue and Black Lechwe.
The hunting lodge is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River and consists of newly erected permanent chalets. Each chalet has its own on-suite bathroom with all the modern amenities that can be expected on a quality Elephant hunting safari, not only hot water and flushing toilets.
There is a central dining and outdoor (Lapa) entertainment area with wonderful views of the river. The hunting lodge and facilities are all secluded, extremely comfortable and your private chef will prepare delicious African delicacies.
Nothing will beat an Elephant steak, or freshly caught Nile perch grilled over the open flame and Mopani coals.
WI-FI is available for hunters needing to be in contact with the outside world.
Elephant hunts were only reopened in Zambia in 2005 after decades of being closed due to extreme poaching in the 70’ and 80’s where population levels were almost unsustainable.
Populations have well recovered and today many trophy Elephant bulls are being hunted.
Elephant hunting follows traditional methods and will take place on foot, following fresh tracks until a bull is spotted. It is said you can expect to walk a mile for every pound of ivory. Once you have the Elephant “in your sites”, you and your professional hunter will discuss and determine whether or not the Elephant is of age and trophy quality.
Often, having covered miles in the day you will catch up to the Elephant, which may have huge tracks, but small tusks. Elephant hunts are often a battle of endurance, but viewing your bull in your trophy room will be well worth the effort.
Guaranteed, shooting will be up close and personal. When planning the Elephant hunt, it would be safe to factor in and plan for a shooting distance of thirty-five yards or less.
As such, an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Elephant Shot Placement is going to be critical with special consideration being placed on the angle between the hunter and the brain of the Elephant.
While a .375 caliber in most African countries is the minimum legal requirement when dangerous game hunting, a large caliber such as a .458, 458 (Lott), 416 Rigby, or 500 NE to 700 NE would be better. Elephant hunting requires stopping power.
Your international flight will land at Kennith Kaunda International Airport in the capital city of Lusaka.
A popular route is to fly via Oliver Tambo International Airport in South Africa using a dependable airline such as Airlink which is affordable, on time and has facilities available for transporting firearms. If you are importing your personal firearm/’s remember to advise the airline in advance.
Included in this Elephant Hunt quoted cost are return transfers to and from Kennith Kaunda International by road. This road transfer will take approximately 5 hours either way.
A private charter plane can be arranged with the outfitter reducing the travelling time to Rufunsa to approximately 40 minutes. The cost of this charter if the option is exercised can be offset against the road transfer cost.
The followed will be requirements when arranging the Visa into Zambia:
A Yellow fever vaccination certificate is a requirement. Zambia is a malaria area and taking precautions are essential. Your local physician will be able to assist with the vaccination and prescription.
Ensuring you have had a tetanus shot in the last ten years is also recommended, better safe than sorry.
When safari hunting in Africa, it is always wise to ask your medical practitioner for a general antibiotic. One always gets a cold, or flu or similar when on long international flights and on an Elephant hunt, you will need all your wits.
For the woman Elephant huntress or companion, remember your African safari requirements are a little more specific and this concession is remote.
While this Elephant hunt is going to keep you exceptionally busy, there may be some time available to enjoy a few additional African hunting opportunities.
The Rufunsa GMA is well known for producing excellent trophies and a few of the main additions are:
Game hunting in Zambia takes place between the months of May to December. May to August would be preferable as these are the cooler months. Even the season were to be extended, the summer and spring months are incredibly hot and humid.
