The Limpopo Province, named after the Limpopo River which forms the border between South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The Western region offers a wide variety of scenic landscapes with incredible natural biodiversity. Topography includes valleys and plains, with iconic mountain ranges such as the Soutpansberg and Waterberg mountain ranges. The Limpopo province is also home to the worlds largest and oldest Baobab tree.
Limpopo is referred to a “The Hunting Mecca” of South Africa, attracting more sports hunters than any other region of the country. More than 80% of South Africa’s private hunting and game breeding ranches are situated in the Limpopo Province. High fenced sustainable ranching and game management has led to improved genetics, bigger trophies and has contributed to South Africa’s conservation success story. The famous Mapungubwe Nature Reserve and the northern part of the Kruger National Park are also situated in Limpopo and numerous day trips can be arranged for non-hunting companions on the safari.
Embarking on a Cape Buffalo hunt in South Africa’s rugged and untamed Waterberg region is nothing short of an adrenaline-fueled adventure that will leave you breathless and exhilarated. This is the beginning of a journey that promises heart-pounding excitement and memories to last a lifetime.
This Cape Buffalo hunt will be done on foot, following the traditional principles of fair chase. This is truly a dangerous game hunting safari, and these big boys will be found in “the thick stuff”. Don and his team will work hard to find your dream Buffalo. Some Buffalo will have deep drops and curls, others a wide spread with heavy bosses. One thing that is guaranteed is,they are all mean as can be.
Cape Buffalo are cunning and wise and are known to avoid and outsmart hunters. A charging Buffalo is going to come to you like a freight train. Charging at more than thirty five miles an hour, destroying everything in its path, with the only purpose being to gauge you to death. A Buffalo shows no emotion or behavior change before a charge and only a bullet in the brain will stop him.
The Cape Buffalo is a tough member of the African big 5. Poorly hit, Cape Buffalo are incredibly difficult to stop. Social media platforms are forever posting Cape Buffalo charges, and many outfitters who were not on their game on the day, have either moved on to meet their makers, or have battle scars as a permanent reminder. It takes one bullet to kill a Cape Buffalo, and another good few to convince him of the fact. It is the dead Buffalo that will kill you.
Buffalo shot placement is all about anchoring the animal. Head shots will be avoided, unless the Buffalo is in full charge. The preferred shot would be a third of the way up the shoulder, into the vitals, immediately followed up by a few more well-placed bullets ensuring that the Buffalo is anchored and in fact dead. Approach with caution.
The hunting adventure will start when you land at Oliver Tambo International Airport. You will be met by Don, your African outfitter and transferred to the safari lodge. The transfer will be a three-hour drive on national tar roads which are in good condition. Be sure to make a stop at the famous Vaalwater Hotel, for a recharge and an ice-cold beverage, or two!!
The transfer is scenic and you will traverse through some of the most incredible landscape.
