The average on Elephant trophies in the Caprivi can vary between 45-55 lbs, while the odd 60+ pounders frequent these areas. This Elephant hunt is for a maximum size of 50 pounds.

Zambezi Region, formally known as the Caprivi Strip is a narrow stretch of land, “jutting out” in the northeastern part of Namibia, measuring a length of 280 miles, a varied width of between 20 and 40 miles. This corridor of land is critical for the migration of Elephants between the countries of Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Angola.
The Zambezi Region is home to a wide range of African big game, including Elephants, Cape Buffalo, Hippos and Nile Crocodiles.
Rivers such as the Linyati and Kwando, support rich ecosystems that attract herds of Elephants, especially during the dry season. Cape Buffalo also cross the Chobe River from Botswana to feed on the lush open areas of savanna in Namibia.

The safari starts with an international flight into Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek. From Windhoek, you will take a domestic/regional flight from Hosea Kutako to Katima Mulilo Airport. Regional flights take place at a frequency of three times per week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
The Caprivi Strip can also be accessed via Kasane in Botswana, but for hunters bring their own rifles it does create additional administration traveling through Botswana. Spending a night or two in Windhoek, before or after the safari is suggested. The Hilton Hotel is rifle friendly and there are a variety of popular venues for fine dining and sampling a few local beers, such as “The Butchers Block”, or ” Joe’s Beer House”.

Though it takes longer, this route allows you to truly experience Namibia’s ever-changing landscapes, making the journey just as memorable as the Cape Buffalo hunt itself. For hunters who have extra time in their schedule to enjoy this option, the landscapes are truly magnificent.

Protective clothing should be manufactured from light cotton fabric, with colors matching the environment, such as olive, khaki and greens.
Temperatures, depending on the month of the hunting safari can vary by as much as 35 Fahrenheit, so jackets providing warmth and insulation are important, as well as gloves and “woolly hats”. While a four-by-four truck may be used to cover greater distances as the hunting concession is large. Departure and arrivals times may be in the early/late hours when temperatures are cool.
Pack a good quality and comfortable pair of walking boots, extra laces are always a good idea. Do not over pack as the lodge provides daily laundry services.
The Caprivi, being characterized by floodplains is materially affected by the rainy season literally “filling up” like a bathtub during the rainy season. The area supports an array of African wildlife and aquatic creatures. The dry winter months are the preferred when Elephant hunting which run from May to September.
Temperatures are more pleasant, with lower levels of humidity and a reduced risk of dehydration.
On this Elephant hunt in Namibia, there will be plenty of Elephant to choose from. Stalking up close and going unnoticed to position yourself into shooting range, well that is a different discussion.

As the Caprivi is flat, walking a few miles a day is not classified as “extreme hunting”. However, be aware as the reed beds are filled with Nile Crocodile and Hippo. Being on “high alert” always is crucial to survival in the Caprivi.
Once fresh Elephant sign has been spotted, or a glimpse of a suitable Bull, the walk and stalk will begin. Having an in-depth knowledge of Elephant shot placement is critical. The angle of the point of entry of the bullet into the brain changes continually relative to the distance between the hunter and the Elephant.
