The Cape Buffalo can be summed up in three simple words: Cunning, Unpredictable, and Dangerous. Often referred to as “Africa’s Black Death” or “The Widow Maker,” it has earned its place in Africa’s Big 5 and is often regarded as one of Africa’s most dangerous animals to hunt.
Some points worth considering when hunting Cape Buffalo:
• These beasts are seen as being cunning, stubborn, and unpredictable, and can become aggressive without warning should they feel threatened or if they are wounded.
• When hunting Cape Buffalo, ensure that your shot placement is accurate before taking the shot. This tough, resilient bovine is extremely unforgiving of poor shot placement, and will not hesitate to charge and defend itself, taking out anything or anyone that it sees as a threat. Added to that, the old saying goes that it takes one bullet to down a Buffalo, and another couple to convince it that it’s dead…and you have a good idea of the savage nature of the beast.
• The Cape Buffalo is renowned for both its power and speed, reaching up to 35 miles per hour when charging. When you have close to 2,000 pounds of thundering Buffalo (together with its sharp horns!) bearing down on you, you have a serious problem if you are in its path!
• Cape Buffalo possess a great sense of smell and hearing, and these, combined with their ability to camouflage themselves, make for a very challenging hunt.
• This hunting adversary is known to be extremely dangerous when wounded, and will often double back on the hunter, launching a surprise attack from behind. Be warned!
This remote hunting block is in Western Tanzania, where free-range hunts are undertaken on the 300,000-acre block. It is renowned for its remoteness, natural beauty, array of wildlife, and diverse ecosystems, while being less populated than many other regions within the country, allowing hunters the opportunity to experience an authentic Africa hunt.
The area features a diverse range of landscapes, including woodlands, savannas, and river systems, which in turn support many species of both African plains game and dangerous game. The area is home to many notable species, including members of Africa’s Big 5, as well as many antelope species, and is home to about 70% of the huntable species in Tanzania.
The area is also involved in several conservation efforts to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the area. These include structured conservation management through TAWA, community involvement in wildlife management, ongoing monitoring of wildlife populations, and various anti-poaching programs and initiatives.
The Lunda Nkwambi GCA is seen as being one of the best hunting blocks that Tanzania has to offer, with the overall hunting experience that it offers hunters in the region being exceptional. For hunters, it provides a memorable hunting experience, with the combination of its size, rich biodiversity, and relatively low human population all being major draw cards.

While hunting in Tanzania, ensure that you are familiar with local hunting regulations, including knowing which species you are allowed to hunt under your specific hunting license. Other important regulations are that animals are not allowed to be hunted from a vehicle or chased, and no females, young, or immature animals may be harvested. The country’s hunting season runs from 1st July to 31st December, with hunting taking place during the drier months in Tanzania. Lastly, hunting is only allowed during daylight hours, and there is no hunting allowed under artificial lights.
The tented accommodation will make you feel you have stepped back in time, with the modern amenities being a welcome addition to the safari tents of old. Relax and take in the old-style camping ambiance, with the wildlife on your doorstep, offering travellers to the region a glimpse into the sights and sounds of Africa.
Your resident chef will serve up tasty culinary delights and you can expect tasty meals full of flavor that may often incorporate meat from recent hunting safaris.
When flying into Tanzania, hunters should land at either Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha.
• From there on wards, hunters will enjoy a domestic flight on Precision Air, from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport to Dodoma.
• A flight from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma will cost approximately US$300 return and take around 1h 15 min.
• A flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Dodoma will cost approximately US$150 return, and will take about 1hr 30 min.
• Upon your arrival in Dodoma, you will journey about 3 1/2 hours by road to reach the hunting grounds.
As a member of Africa’s Big 5, a minimum of a .375 caliber rifle must be used when hunting the Cape Buffalo and any other dangerous game in Tanzania.
With accurate shot placement, a well-placed bullet from a 416 Rigby, 404 Jeffery, 458 WM, or Lott will also bring down this strong bovine. While bow hunting is allowed for plains game species and the Cape buffalo, no other dangerous game may be targeted using a bow.
Double rifles such as the 470NE, 500NE, and up are preferred, especially when in close quarters with this dangerous adversary. Hunting methods for Cape buffalo are generally the traditional walk-and-stalk method, after initially utilizing a vehicle to cover large distances while glassing. Trackers will search for tracks (spoor), or signs that the buffalo have been through the area, or spotting of the actual herd itself.
From there onward, the hunting party will proceed on foot, carefully using the terrain to their advantage as they slowly stalk their prey until they are within striking range.
• Remain focused and alert, the bush is a very unpredictable environment where changes happen at the drop of a hat.
• Read up and know about the correct shot placement for your targeted species, to ensure a quick and humane death as well as an ethical hunt.
• Become acquainted with the hunting laws of the country, as well as the hunting area.
• Listen to your PH…what he says goes, no matter what. No hesitation, do as you are instructed to.
• Ensure all gear is in excellent condition and suited to the terrain and species you are targeting .
• Safety first, always. Once the animal is shot, do not approach immediately, and be ready with a follow-up shot(s) should it be needed. Give the animal time and space before it tries to attack one last time.
Remember to check requirements before visiting Tanzania, as they may change at any given time.
