The Mpumalanga Province in South Africa consists of incredibly diverse landscapes, panoramic mountain passes, long valleys, waterfalls and rivers and dense forests.
Famous tourist attractions include the Blyde River Canyon and the Kruger National Park. Hunting areas can be divided into two areas, split between the Drakensburg Mountains namely, the Lowveld and the Highveld.
The lowveld is referred to as “Big Game Hunting Country”, with dangerous game hunts taking place on private ranches or in government reserves, which in South Africa is classified as free-range hunting. The area produces big Elephant, Hippo and Crocodile and Cape Buffalo, with plains game such as Kudu, Nyala, Waterbuck and Bushbuck.
Night hunting safaris for Serval, Spotted Hyena, Genets, Civets and Porcupine are popular in the lowveld due to high population densities.
In the highveld, game hunting conditions change completely favouring other plains game species such as Cape Eland, Black Wildebeest, Springbuck and Blesbuck.

South Africa is calling with an exciting hunting safari, offering four species on one spectacular hunt! This challenging hunting adventure is set in South Africa’s Lowveld region, close to the famous Kruger National Park. Harvest Africa’s notorious Cape buffalo, as well as an Impala, a Warthog, and a Blue Wildebeest on one hunt in South Africa.
Cape Buffalo hunting is done by tracking spoor. On the hunt you will get up close and personal with the Cape Buffalo. Be sure you know your shot placement on a buffalo… Are you ready for the “Widow Maker”, up close and personal. This is a dangerous African hunt and a wounded Cape Buffalo is exceptionally dangerous.
Impala are common antelope that are a must-have for any hunter’s trophy collection. Impala can also provide a tasty meal for the table during a hunt and offer a unique and beautiful trophy to take home. A Blue Wildebeest is a very resilient antelope and shot placement on a wildebeest is critical. The walk and stalk method will work best early in the morning, or the animals are out grazing.
Warthog usually drink daily, so hunting warthog over a water hole is usually the most successful method, besides just getting lucky and spotting a big boar. Sitting in a blind over a water hole is a lot of fun! Warthog are perpetually on the move and shooting one can prove to be challenging.
Located outside Nelspruit and close to the famous Kruger National Park, the game lodge is set in the majestic Louw’s Creek mountains. It offers hunting enthusiasts untamed and natural hunting grounds, sure to not only meet but exceed your expectations! Enjoy an African safari set in the heart of the Mpumalanga bush veld!
The lodge consists of chalet rooms equipped with king-size beds and en-suite bathrooms. Each bathroom has both a bathtub and shower, where basic amenities like soap, shampoo, and towels are provided. The lodge has electricity, but backup generators are in place should there be any power failures. Keeping in touch with friends and family back home is easy with the lodge’s WiFi which is easily accessible.
The family-friendly lodge boasts two swimming pools are well as an outside play area for children, while the braai area and fire pit provide the perfect backdrop and some mesmerizing views for some sun downers after a hectic day plains game hunting!
Hunters will land at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and from there take a domestic flight to Kruger Airport. Airlink is recommended for this flight route as this airline is not only affordable (US$ 150 to US$ 200 return), but also professional, on time and equipped to safely transport firearms.
Africa Sky Boutique is recommended for hunters spending a night in Johannesburg. Management of the hotel assists with road transfers to/from OR Tambo International. They can also deal with all rifle import permits and obtain per-clearance approvals, thus avoiding delays. For further information, see “Affiliate Services” below.
Should hunters prefer a road transfer from Oliver Tambo Airport to the hunting lodge, Peter can arrange and the cost (depending on fuel costs at the time of booking) will be approximately US$ 800 return. The road transfer takes approximately 5 hours.
South Africa is not regulated with regards to a specific hunting season and Plains Game Hunts can take place throughout the all year. The cooler months, which run from April to October are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are just to high. The drier months see the grasses being shorter in the veld, and the bush veld not as dense, both of which allows hunters to more easily spot their prey.
The months of November through to February are also the rainy season. Rain showers and bad weather can continue for days, literally placing a “damper” on the South African Hunt.
While the provision of a suitable hunting rifle is included on this African hunt, you may want to bring your own, being familiar and knowing trajectories etc. To import a firearm into South Africa for the purpose of hunting, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form which you can obtain online.
International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Peter, proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
South African is renowned for its exceptional African plains game hunting options, and this hunting safari will not disappoint. Additional plains game species are available on request. Have a chat to Peter.
On a Cape Buffalo hunt, we at Game Hunting Safaris are firm believers that there can never be “too much gun”. As much as shot placement is always a critical factor, the hunter needs a rifle with stopping power. Buffalo can weigh in at in excess of 2000 pounds.
A .375 loaded with decent quality 300 grain bullets is the minimum legal requirement when dangerous game hunting in South Africa. But bigger caliber rifles such as a .458, .458 Lott, .404, .416 are also recommended along with any big double.
When making your choice of what rifle to bring, as a rule of thumb bring the biggest caliber that you can accurately shoot and handle with confidence.
