The Selous Reserve, renamed to the Nyerere National Park, is a protected area of pristine wilderness situated in Southern Tanzania. The ecosystem extends south into Niassa Province of Northern Mozambique. In 1982, the Selous reserve was classified as a World Heritage Site owing to the high levels of biodiversity and vast undisturbed natural landscapes. Covering an area of more than 21,000 square miles and hosting a variety of African plains game and dangerous game animals.
The Kilombero River provides more than 20 miles of river frontage. With access to this river system, the concession is well-suited for Hippo and Crocodile hunting opportunities. Habitat in the Selous consists of rolling hills, brush, Miombo woodlands, and rocky outcrops. Perfect grounds for a Leopard hunt. Due to the fragility of the ecosystems, human habitat is not permitted, and access is strictly controlled.
Tanzania is filled with Cape Buffalo and has the highest Buffalo population in Africa, over 400 000 Buffalo. In the Selous, you will come “face to face” with your dream trophy Buffalo, whether it be a big bossed bull with a wide spread, or “scrum cap”, coveted by many trophy hunters. The Selous is well known for producing Elephant and Lion hunting safaris, producing big black-maned Lions and “tuskers”. • When hunting a Cape Buffalo, understanding Buffalo shot placement is important. Make the first shot count.
• As the saying goes, it takes one bullet to kill a Buffalo, and another good many to convince the Buffalo of the fact that he is dead.
• Head-shots are to be avoided unless the Buffalo is charging. Only a bullet to the brain will anchor a charging Buffalo.
• Your professional hunter will recommend access to the vitals via the broadside or frontal shot. Cape Buffalo do not always present the “perfect shot.”
• In these instances, a quartering towards or away shot may have to be considered to harvest the trophy.
• An African Buffalo hunt is truly dangerous game hunting, at all times listen to your professional hunter.
When hunting Cape buffalo in Tazania and targeting a big “Dagga Boy,” you will need stopping power. Buffalo have earned the name “Widow Makers” for a reason. Choose a caliber of rifle that you can comfortably manage and shoot accurately. This African buffalo hunt requires a legal minimum requirement of a .375 with a 300-grain tip. As Buffalo is known to “eat lead,” larger calibers such as a 416 Rigby, .458, or 458 Lott, or any double rifle such as a 500 NE are recommended.

Depending on the time of arrival in Tanzania, it is suggested to stay overnight in Dar es Salaam. To fly from the Unites States to the city of Dar Es Salaam, the easiest and most common route involves connecting flights, with airlines like Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and KLM being popular choices, often with stops in Istanbul or Amsterdam.
An alternative would be to fly to South Africa and land at Oliver Tambo International Airport. Airlink has regional flights from Oliver Tambo to Dar Es Salaam. Should hunters need to stay over in Johannesburg, we would suggest African Sky Boutique Hotel. The hotel is situated in close proximity to the airport, offers to/from transfers and can assist with firearm permits. For more information, see “Affiliate Services” in the listing below.
As Tanzanian game hunting grounds in the Selous are remote, a charter flight will be needed which will take approximately one hour and take you directly to the concession from Dar es Salaam. Please confirm arrangements with Jaco. Charter prices do fluctuate due to fluctuation of fuel costs.

Hides must be dried to the extent that they look brittle enough to crack when bent and Buffalo trophies must be packed immediately after treatment.
