When is the best time to Hunt in Zambia?

The hunting season in Zambia is from May to December. The best time for to hunt is in the cooler and dryer months with run from May to October. In saying that, anytime is a great time to enjoy this exceptional hunting destination.

The Tondwa Hunting Concession in Zambia

This concession refers to the Tondwa Game Management Area (GMA), which is a large wildlife management area located in Northern Zambia and spans over one hundred thousand acres.

The primary goal of conservation in this area is to protect the biodiversity, which includes wildlife populations through responsible management programs. The management of the hunting concession is done in collaboration with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. The area has healthy populations of plains game including iconic species such as Defassa Waterbuck, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Puku, Lechwe (Kafue and Black) and of course Sitatunga.

Hunting Sitatunga in Zambia

Sitatunga are swamp dwellers, medium sized antelope with the male being considerably larger than the female. Males, also have spiral horns, where female Sitatunga do not. A trophy male Sitatunga can weigh in at 280 pounds and stand up to 49 inches at the shoulder.

Sitatunga are highly specialized in living aquatic lifestyles and spend most of their time in swampy areas. Hooves are elongated and splayed, This assists with weight distribution in muddy areas. Sitatunga are both browsers and grazers, feeding on water vegetation, pastoral and forest vegetation.

Sitatunga Hunting Methods

On this safari, be prepared to get muddy and wet making this hunt exceptionally exciting. A “Mokoro,” which is a dugout wooden canoe is often used to traverse the waterways, silent and ensuring stealth. You will see loads of Hippo’s and Crocodiles and hopefully spot your trophy Sitatunga along the way.

Sitatunga are also often hunted by making use of raised platforms overlooking open and marshy areas, where you will wait for the Sitatunga to show himself.

Health and Requirements on a Hunt in Zambia

  • A Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required.
  • Zambia is malaria area and taking precautions are essential. Your local physician will assist.
  • Ensuring you have had a tetanus shot in the last ten years is also recommended. Travelling to the Hunting Lodge

Traveling for the Hunting Safari  

International hunters booking this hunting safari need to enter Zambia in the capital city of Lusaka, landing at Kenith Kaunda International Airport.

From Lusaka, a domestic flight will be taken to Kasama. Transfer to the hunting camp will be by road transfer to the Tondwa hunting concession.

Additional Plains Game Hunts

A variety of species can be added to this Sitatunga hunt for an additional trophy fee. Some of the favourites to hunt while in the region are:

  • Tsessebe (US$ 2250), Cookson Wildebeest (US$ 2500), Defassa Waterbuck (US$ 2500), Reedbuck (US$ 750), Lichtenstein Hartebeest (US$ 1500), Black Lechwe (US$ 7000), and Kafue Lechwe (US$ 4500).

Be sure to advise Steven of the additional species you would like to hunt as a requirement may be to travel between different hunting areas. 

Hunting in Zambia: Logistics, Travel and Preparation

Hunting in Zambia does require a little more back-office administration to ensure everything 100% before commencement of the safari. For first time hunters exploring Zambia, do not be overwhelmed by the administration and requirements. Cancelation Policy:
Deposits are non-refundable, but dates changes can be requested with the same hunting season. As this hunt is strictly based on quota, the safari must place within the same year that the hunt was booked for. Requested date changes need to be communicated to the outfitter not less than ninety days before commencement of the safari.
Security Deposit ($): $9750
Details about the security deposit :
A deposit to secure this hunt in Zambia is calculated at 50% of the day fees, namely, US$ 9750 which is due within 7 days of making the booking. Once the outfitter has confirmed booking dates, the deposit can be paid via the PayPal link, or wire transfer to Bank of America as displayed on our site. The balance, excluding the trophy fee is due 90 days before commencement of the hunting safari.
