Zambia offers an incredible variety of diverse landscapes, from forest to savannah proving hunters with a unique hunting experience.
Zambia is known to produce exceptional trophies for endemic antelope species, as well as regularly producing “big tuskers”, exceptional Cape Buffalo trophies and huge cats (Leopard and Lion).
The hunting season in Zambia is from May to December. The best time for to hunt is in the cooler and dryer months with run from May to October. In saying that, anytime is a great time to enjoy this exceptional hunting destination.
This concession refers to the Tondwa Game Management Area (GMA), which is a large wildlife management area located in Northern Zambia and spans over one hundred thousand acres.
The primary goal of conservation in this area is to protect the biodiversity, which includes wildlife populations through responsible management programs. The management of the hunting concession is done in collaboration with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. The area has healthy populations of plains game including iconic species such as Defassa Waterbuck, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Puku, Lechwe (Kafue and Black) and of course Sitatunga.
Sitatunga are swamp dwellers, medium sized antelope with the male being considerably larger than the female. Males, also have spiral horns, where female Sitatunga do not. A trophy male Sitatunga can weigh in at 280 pounds and stand up to 49 inches at the shoulder.
Sitatunga are highly specialized in living aquatic lifestyles and spend most of their time in swampy areas. Hooves are elongated and splayed, This assists with weight distribution in muddy areas. Sitatunga are both browsers and grazers, feeding on water vegetation, pastoral and forest vegetation.
On this safari, be prepared to get muddy and wet making this hunt exceptionally exciting. A “Mokoro,” which is a dugout wooden canoe is often used to traverse the waterways, silent and ensuring stealth. You will see loads of Hippo’s and Crocodiles and hopefully spot your trophy Sitatunga along the way.
Sitatunga are also often hunted by making use of raised platforms overlooking open and marshy areas, where you will wait for the Sitatunga to show himself.
International hunters booking this hunting safari need to enter Zambia in the capital city of Lusaka, landing at Kenith Kaunda International Airport.
From Lusaka, a domestic flight will be taken to Kasama. Transfer to the hunting camp will be by road transfer to the Tondwa hunting concession.
A variety of species can be added to this Sitatunga hunt for an additional trophy fee. Some of the favourites to hunt while in the region are:
