We at Game Hunting Safaris have hunted giant Crocodile in Mozambique, Hippo in Namibia and this combination hunt in Zimbabwe is not be missed.
The Save Valley conservancy is truly Wild Africa, home to the Big Five. This area in Zimbabwe in fact has some of the highest populations of Black and White Rhino in Africa, with a material focus on wildlife management and conservation of African Wild Dog’s.
This is a limited opportunity to hunt Zimbabwe, in an area with rolling granite hills, open grassland and forests of Teak and Mopane. The Save Rivers runs through the entire concession and is filled with trophy Hippo and plenty of giant Nile Crocodiles.
Zimbabwe has no fixed hunting season. When planning a hunting safari to Zimbabwe, it is better to consider a trip during the cooler months which run from late April to September. This period is also known as the “dry period,” the preferred season for most African hunts.
Chris and team follow the “campfire principles” which means that community projects initiatives such as enhancement of education, infrastructure, sports and medical all benefit as a direct result of the big game hunting safari.
You will not just be on hippo hunt, or crocodile hunting, but will be supporting local communities who heavily rely on international hunters for job creation and the meat proceeds of a Hippo will feed villages for weeks.
The IUCN has classified the Hippo species as vulnerable, but a CITES permit is not a requirement.
Hunting a Hippo in Zimbabwe requires nerves of steel and excellent shot placement when coming face to face with one of Africa’s most dangerous big game species. A Hippo has 36 teeth in its mouth and can in one “chomp” bite a man in half. Hippo are responsible for more human deaths than any other big five animal in Africa.
When it comes to hunting these aquatic creatures, besides sharing the same waterways, Hippo and Crocodile hunting has one major thing in common, shot placement is critical.
A poorly placed shot will see the trophy crocodile sliding back into the waterways and estuaries. These cold-blooded killing machines feel no pain, and a well-placed bullet into the spine or brain is needed to anchor this Apex predator. In the Save Valley in Zimbabwe, you can expect to hunt a trophy crocodile between 3,5 meters (11.5 feet) and 4.5 meters (1,4 feet). These Nile Crocodiles are huge.
Lodgings consist of luxury tented camps, which have en-suite bathrooms, showers and hot and cold running water. The lodge has a private chef who will spoil you with three meals a day, specially according to your dietary preferences.
The point of entry into Zimbabwe is via the Capital city of Harare. If the international flights arrives after 13h00, overnighting in Harare will be needed as the ground transfer takes approximately five hours.
An alternative would be to travel via Oliver Tambo in South Africa, and then take a direct flight to Harare via Airlines such as Air Zimbabwe or Airlink. The flight takes approximately two hours and is most affordable.
The hunter has an option to add on a wide variety of African plains game and specialty animals for an additional trophy fee. Some of the favorite additions to the hunting safari are for hunts such as: (but not limited to) (4% Government Tax needs to be added to the trophy fee).
The Save Valley also offers some superb night safaris for critters such as Civet and Jackal, plus Tiny Ten members namely: Duikers, Grysbok and Klipspringers.
Bird hunts are also available wide variety including Ducks, Francolin, Geese, Pigeons and Doves.
Chris has a variety of quality rifles available should you not want to bring your own, including a .458, 375 H&H and an 8 x 57. When hippo and crocodile hunting, as the brain target is just so small, bullets such as solids or monolithic are required in order to penetrate the thick and bony skulls.Hippo
