Gabon is situated on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa and is bordered by Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and the Republic of the Congo.
The country is a little larger than 100 000 square miles and has a population of approximately 2,7 million people. Topography consists of coastal plains, mountains, and in the east, open savannah areas. Libreville is the capital city of Gabon.
Gabon is still a developing country and is one of the wealthiest in Africa based on per capita income. Gabon’s original inhabitants were the pygmy people the country was originally colonized by the French in the late 19th century. Gabon gained its independence from France in 1960.
The forests of Gabon are consistently humid with high levels being experienced throughout the year. The average humidity is 80% but can increase to as much as 100% during the rainy season.
While the dry season is preferred for hunting, extensive cloud cover reduces water demand but maintains high humidity. The tropical climate is characterized by humidity, heat, and heavy rainfall. Average temperatures are 81 degrees Fahrenheit with the hottest months being from February to April.
The hunting area is 5 hours’ drive from the city of Franceville which is situated on the Southeastern part of the country. The hunting concession borders the Lope National Parks, Gabon’s most famous national park.
The hunting concession covers thousands of acres of pristine rain forest with healthy populations of animals.
Gabon is home to a variety of common Duikers (Blue, Bay and Peter’s), as well as the more elusive species such as the White-Bellied, Gabon, Ogilby’s duiker, Black-Fronted Duiker and Yellow-Backed Duiker.
The concession has a history of producing exceptional Sitatunga and Dwarf Buffalo Trophies which can be included on the 10-day alternative safari in Gabon.
A safari in Gabon is best conducted during the dry season. The drier months influence animal behavior making them a little more predictable. This season also make the animals a little easier to find and assists with improving logistics as to transport.
While Gabon hunts can take place all year long, the preferred season would be from March to November.
Day 1: The safari will commence with your arrival in the city of Libreville, your primary destination of your inbound flight into Gabon.
Libreville is also known as the “Jewel of the West African Coast” and boasts some incredible cuisine and tourist attractions.
Cyrus, and or your hunting guide will meet with you on arrival. You will overnight in the city of Libreville.
Day 2: Hunters will take a domestic transfer back to the airport, thereafter a domestic flight to the city of Franceville which will leave at approximately 10h00. This domestic flight takes one and half hours. Transfer to the hunting lodge will be via road and will take approximately six hours depending on the conditions.
Day 3 to Day 9: Seven full days of hunting in Gabon
Day 10: Road transfer from the hunting lodge to Franceville and then taking the midday flight to Libreville. Hunters will again overnight in Libreville before departing on their international flights.
Due to the expense of hunting in Gabon including overnight costs, hunting licenses and international travel costs, the 13-day safari is suggested. Not only are there more hunting days, but Dwarf Buffalo and Sitatunga can be added to the targeted species list.
The hunting lodge is a comfortable camp situated within the forest area. There is running water, bathrooms and flushing toilets. When hunting these remote areas in Africa, a satellite phone is always recommended.
