An African hunting safari is a dream that is often realized only once or twice in a lifetime by international hunters. South Africa has an unrivaled diversity of game animals, more than 50 plains game species, specialty animals and of course the “Big Five”. No matter your hunting preference, being a variety of “winged hunts”, plains game, dangerous game hunts, or nocturnal hunts , you will find a suitable hunting safari.
Why hunt in South Africa? South Africa has a large, organized and well structured safari hunting industry combined with hunting being safaris being the most affordable on the African continent.
Quota for Spotted and Brown Hyena are limited in South Africa.
Hunting these illusive nocturnal species will require a variety of techniques. Hyena hunting takes place using the baiting method. Stretches of ground will be “dragged” with fresh baits and blood from recent hunts which will lead to the baited area. This will allow predators, patrolling their territories to “pick up the scent” and follow the trail leading to the bait. This same method will be used to attract Honey Badgers, Bush Pigs, Civets and Caracal.
Do not be fooled by the size of a Honey Badger, they are brave, extremely fierce and aggressive. A Honey Badger will chase all other animals, including Hyena’s from the bait site. When the badger “comes in”, shoot it!! FoxPro callers are also used to attract Hyena, both Spotted and Brown Hyena respond well. Bear in mind that Leopards also respond well to callers, and know that while you may be tempted, currently there are not any Leopard hunting permits in South Africa.
Serval hunting is the real challenge. These cats and are highly intelligent and rarely “come in” on a bait. Artificial light is normally used. Hunters and the PH will travel areas that Serval are known to occupy using a 4 x 4 truck to cover greater distance. This nocturnal hunt is a “bucket list” activity for many hunters.
Incorporating night-vision gear into the nocturnal hunt brings a whole new level of excitement. Rifles scopes are fitted with night vision and thermal scans are used by the PH to monitor activity. These tools turn hunting brown hyena and other night critters into a high-tech hunting adventure. Combine traditional hunting techniques with the challenge of mastering modern equipment. This fusion makes each outing a unique test of both skill and innovation. The distance between the “bind” and “bait” will be between thirty and fifty yards depending on wind conditions and topography.

As South Africa is not regulated by a specific hunting season, hunting for Hyena and other nighttime critters takes place all year around. The best time to hunt in South Africa will be during the cooler months, from April until October. Summer temperatures tend to be too hot, with the heat bringing a bunch of other pests such as insects, spiders and mosquitoes.
While the provision of a suitable hunting rifle is and option on this African hunt, you may want to bring your own, being familiar and knowing trajectories etc. To import a firearm into South Africa for the purpose of sports hunting, hunters will need to complete a SAPS 520 form which you can obtain online.
International hunters will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Johan and proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
