This really is an incredible deal for some of the best nighttime hunting opportunities in South Africa.

Quota for Hyena hunts in South Africa are limited for 2025, so you will need to book early to avoid disappointment.

We at Game Hunting Safaris.com are so impressed with this outfitter and hunting opportunity, that we have booked the last permits for quota in 2024 and will be taking on this Hyena hunting challenge for Brown Hyena.

 The Hyena Hunting Safari

Hunting a Brown, or Spotted Hyena at night is a thrilling test of skill and nerve that will push the hunter to your limits. You will need to rely on your instincts and senses like never before.

There is nothing quite like listening to the sound of a Spotted Hyena “whooping” in the night, or the “slapping” of a Brown Hyena’s paws as they run through the darkness. It really is an absolute privilege.

Tracking and spotting Hyena and the other nighttime critters, Honey Badger, Civet Cat and Seval in the pitch-black wilderness is a challenge. The nocturnal hunt will demand patience, precision, and a deep understanding of animal behaviour, along with the ability to stay awake and alert. On our recent Hyena hunting safari, it was the lack of sleep that we really battled with. It takes a while for your body and brain to adjust according to the new “hours of operating”.

The Hunting Safari (In the dark)

Hunting these illusive nocturnal species will require a variety of techniques.

Brown Hyena hunting will also take place using the baiting method, along with “callers”. This method will also be used when hunting Spotted Hyena.

Larges stretches of ground will be “dragged” with fresh baits from recent hunts, and FoxPro callers will be made use of. Baits for the Civet and Honey Badger, also known by the name “Ratel” will be placed in strategic areas which the hunter and professional hunter will patrol. Artificial lighting will be used to spot these nighttime predators. All these species really make incredible full mount trophies.

Serval hunting is a real challenge. These are incredible cats and are highly intelligent. These cats are known for being able to solve complex problems and can easily outsmart their prey. Artificial light may be used when hunting Serval in South Africa.

Unlike Spotted Hyena, Brown Hyena do not call, laugh, and giggle. They enter the hunting grounds like a thief in the night.

We at Game Hunting Safaris.com had such a blast when Hyena hunting, we have now also equipped one of our personal rifles with night vision. We can categorically state that these nocturnal hunts are not only a lot of fun, but they test your wits and skills.

This nocturnal hunt is exceptional value for money and a “bucket list” activity.

Advanced Hunting Technology

Incorporating night-vision gear and other advanced technology into your nocturnal hunt brings a whole new level of excitement. Rifles scopes are fitted with night vision and thermal scans are used by the PH to monitor activity.

These tools turn hunting brown hyena and other night critters into a high-tech hunting adventure. Combine the thrill of traditional hunting techniques with the challenge of mastering modern equipment. This fusion makes each outing a unique test of both skill and innovation.

Your African Outfitter

This outfitter operates in a few territories, including South Africa, Elephant hunting in Zimbabwe and has access to concessions in Mozambique and Namibia.

Not only do they specialize in specialty nocturnal hunts, but also plains game and dangerous game hunts since as early as 1993. They are a major outfit with a history of producing world class trophies through ethical and fair chase hunting. They deliver the complete safari adventure and giving special attention to every hunter.

Transfer to and from the Hunting Concession

Your hunting adventure will start when you land at Oliver Tambo International Airport. You will be met by outfitter and transferred to the hunting camp. The transfer will be a three-hour drive on national tar road, quite pleasant and safe with loads of opportunities to stop and explore a little on the way.

Accommodation on the Hyena Hunting Safari.

This hunting lodge offers you Africa in a unique way. Unwind and relax in the African bushveld. Accommodations at the lodge are elegant chalets (round houses) and are furnished in African style safari tents, all with en-suite bathrooms.

The lodge boats a camp area, with roaring fires and a swimming pool.

The Nocturnal Hunting Season

As South Africa is not regulated by a specific hunting season, Hyena and hunts for other nighttime cats can take place all year around. The best time to hunt in South Africa will be during the cooler months, from April until October. Summer temperatures tend to be too hot, with the heat bringing a bunch of other nighttime critters.
