Traveling for the Leopard Hunting Safari

Hunters can enter Namibia at Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek). Hugo, or a member of his team will collect you at the airport, and assist with any firearm permits. Transfer to the hunting concession will be via road to the Kohomas Hochland area.

This transfer will take approximately two hours. No hunting time will be wasted on unnecessary travel, nor is there a need for additional domestic charter flights increasing costs.

The African Outfitter on this Safari

Hugo is a well-known outfitter and is respected internationally, conducting dangerous game and plains game hunts since 2010. Operating in the two territories, namely South Africa and Namibia, Leopard hunts are Hugo’s  specialty and passion.

Hugo has a history of success in delivering trophy cats. You will not be disappointed booking this Leopard hunt.  Leopards in Namibia share the same habitat as both the Brown and Spotted Hyena, with Spotted Hyena being more common.

With this Leopard hunt, Hyena hunts for both the above species can be added onto the hunting safari for a trophy amount of US$ 2200 each. The concession has healthy and sustainable populations of Hyena, both Brown and Spotted.

Note that Brown Hyena are not exportable to the US. As CITES records Spotted Hyena as a species of least concern, permits are issued for Spotted Hyena Hunts and they us thus 100% exportable.

Hyena hunting, as these mythical creatures share the African nights with these big Cats, are a favorite add on activity and an opportunistic nocturnal hunt.

Cheetah hunting is legal in Namibia and both males and females can be hunted for a trophy fee of US$ 4000. It is a great opportunity to harvest both big cats on one hunting safari.

The Leopard Hunting Method

The concession covers many thousands of acres, meaning there are plenty of big cats available.  Hugo, prior to your arrival, will bait the selected area in order to start the process of attracting these cats.

A typical day on a Leopard hunt will be to leave the hunting lodge at first light after a light breakfast. You and the team will then head out, traversing the concession, checking and restocking baited area.

Trails cams will be made use of to check for activity and to try and identify size, sex and age of the Leopard. Once a trophy Leopard has been identified, a temporary blind will be constructed using local materials and it will then be “game on.”

Namibia produces some of the biggest Leopards in Africa and this concession regularly produces Leopards that can exceed 180 pounds in weight, they are huge! A trophy Leopard no matter where you are hunting in Africa is classified as a fully mature male.

In Namibia, Leopard hunting with hounds is also illegal.

LEOPARD BAITING

Leopard Shot Placement

When Leopard hunting in Namibia, success is all about placing the good quality expanding bullet in the area of the vital organs in an attempt to drop the Leopard straight out of the tree, onto the ground. The ideal goal to ensure a quick, humane and ethical kill. If the desired Leopard shot placement does not go according to plan, know that a wounded Leopard is incredibly dangerous.

Tracking and following up on a wounded Leopard is exceptionally dangerous. Pound for pound, a Leopard is the most dangerous animal in the world.

Understanding the anatomy of a Leopard is critical to ensure a clean kill. These cats place themselves in all sorts of peculiar positions while feeding or protecting their meals and as such an in-depth knowledge of Leopard shot placement is needed.

Equipment for a Leopard hunt in Namibia

Bow hunting dangerous game such as a Leopard, Lion or other African big five when on safari in Namibia is illegal. A rifle when hunting in Namibia for dangerous game, needs to be a minimum caliber of a .375.

As Leopard shot placement is so important, good quality optics are required.

Additional Plains Game Hunts

This outfitter has a variety of plains game hunts that can be added to the hunting safari. Endemic species such as Black Faced Impala (US$ 2800) and Damara Diki-Diki (US$ 2200) are available.

Blue Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Warthog, Roan and Sable are also available.

Namibia also has a great reputation for producing top quality trophies when Kudu and Eland hunting  These spiral horn antelope grow enormous in size due to the habitat and feed quality in these areas.
Best Time for a hunting safari in Namibia
The best season for a Leopard hunt will be in the cooler months which run from late April to August.

While the big game hunting season In Namibia runs from 1st February to 30th November, the summer months are just too hot and can present serious risk of dehydration.
If you have not hunted Namibia before, now is your chance at a great price with Hugo, an exceptional outfitter.
