Hunting a leopard in Namibia’s Kunene region is like stepping into a primal dance with danger and exhilaration, amidst some of Africa’s most rugged and breathtaking landscapes.
It’s not just a Leopard hunt; but an experience that will tap into your primal instincts that connects you deeply with nature.
The hunting adventure begins with careful planning and preparation, the terrain consists of rocky hills, dry riverbeds, and sparse vegetation that will stretch as far as the eye can see. It’s the perfect habitat for leopards, masters of stealth and ambush.
The thrill of a Leopard hunt comes not just from the chase itself but from the danger inherent in hunting such a powerful and cunning creature. Leopards are not to be underestimated—they’re swift, agile and exceptionally dangerous. Pound for pound, (excepting for a Caracal), Leopards are the most powerful cats in Africa.
Baiting is the preferred method used on a Leopard hunt. A carcass or bait station lures Leopards to a specific location. Numerous baits will be placed in areas where Ruan and his trackers have seen fresh Leopard sign, high enough in the trees to be out of reach by Hyena that inhabit the same areas.
Baits will be checked daily for fresh activity, often using trail cams. Once a suitable target Leopard has been identified, a concealed blind will be constructed and it will be ” game on”, waiting and watching for your trophy Leopard to hopefully return, preparing for the perfect shot.
Perfecting Leopard shot placement is a skill that requires study, understanding and adherence to ethical hunting practices. These big cats can shift and move into all kinds of positions whilst on a bait. At all times, it is important to know the position of the vital organs.
The moment of victory is not only about securing a trophy Leopard, but about experiencing a profound sense of harmony with the natural world—a reward that transcends the thrill of the hunt and lingers as a testament to the splendor of the wild.
Should you harvest your Leopard trophy early, or find time and inclination between checking Leopard baits, Ruan offers a wide variety of African plains game which can be added to the safari. Namibia is a also a favored plains game hunting destination producing exceptional trophies. A few of the favorite species (but not limited to are:
– Hartmann or Burchell Zebra (US$ 1450), Black faced Impala (US$ 1900), Roan (US$ 8000), Damara Dik-Dik (US$ 2300, Giraffe (US$ 2900)
Namibia is known to produce exceptional Eland (US$ 2600) and magnificent Oryx (Gemsbok) US$ 850.
Namibia is also the only country in Africa that allows Cheetah to be legally hunted. Being an opportunistic hunt as Cheetah cannot be baited, many hours a day will need to be spent traversing the areas. Additional costs involved are US$ 500 a day and a trophy fee of US$ 6000. If you wish to partake in a Cheetah hunt, Ruan will need to be notified in advance in order to arrange permits.
