Hunting in Botswana

Botswana is popular for Leopard, Elephant and Cape Buffalo hunts. For years, Botswana was known as one of the top big game hunting destinations in Africa. In 2013, the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism issued a ban on hunting in all Government and Community lands. On the 22 May 2019, the Government lifted the ban under pressure from local communities with all the usual regulations being put in place.

Hunting in Botswana is conducted using a variety of different ways, from vehicles, poling the waters in a Makoro or walking the ancient hunting paths with the resident Bushman trackers.

Botswana has the highest population of Elephants compared to any other African country,  with numbers in excess of 130 000. Cape buffalo populations are also healthy, with populations estimated at more than 30 000. Botswana remains a magnificent, wildlife-rich country and an amazing country for any type of hunting safaris.

The best time to hunt Leopard in Botswana

The hunting season in Botswana runs from April to September, which are also the cooler months. In summer, the temperatures are high, which cause an influx of critters such as insects, ticks and mosquitos. If you have hunted in Africa during the warmer months, you will know all about the infamous “pepper ticks” and how unpleasant their bites can be.

Leopards travel great distances and as such when it comes to Leopard hunting in Botswana and health, these safaris can take you into malaria areas. Speak with your physician about obtaining a prescription against malaria.

The Leopard Hunting Safari

This Leopard hunt in Botswana is with Kalahari Bushmen and hounds. It is one of the most exciting ways of Leopard hunting. This method of Leopard hunting has a very high success ratio compared to more traditional methods such as baiting.

In this area of the Kalahari Desert, the brush is open and low. The sands of the desert are soft, making for easier tracking and following of fresh sign. Once a big Leopard track has been found, the Bushman will start tracking the cat. Many hunters believe this traditional method of Leopard hunting is by far the most ethical hunting method.

Leopards occupy enormous territories, and it is a possibility that a few days will be spent following the cat. Once the Bushman get close to the cat, the hounds will be released by the dog handlers. The hounds will follow the scent. The hunting party will have to travel at speed to reach the hounds and the Leopard that has been kept at bay. The dangerous game professional hunter will then get you as close to the Leopard as possible. The best time to hunt Leopards with hounds will be early in the morning, or late in the afternoon, before the rising temperatures of midday heat.

A wildlife officer, being a representative of the Botswana Government will be present on the Leopard hunt. This hunt is adrenaline filled and action packed from start to finish and is highly recommended.

Leopard Shot Placement

When it comes to Leopard hunting, successfully harvesting a trophy Leopard is going to be all about shot placement. Pound for pound, a wounded Leopard is the most dangerous animal in the world (some argue that Caracal are). A Leopard can do extreme damage in just a matter of seconds.

As a rule of thumb, 100 stiches for every second the Leopard is on you. Leopard hunting in Botswana is dangerous business, but one of the best value and adrenaline hunting safaris available.

Health when Hunting in Botswana

When planning your African hunt to Botswana, prioritize health by consulting your doctor about recommended vaccinations (Hepatitis A, Rabies and Typhoid) and Malaria Prophylaxis. Malaria can be a significant risk in Botswana, especially in the northern areas such as the Okavango Delta.  While Clive and Kim have medical kits on standby, packing a personal kit including your necessary medical provisions is essential (sunblock, contact lense solution, etc.)
