Leopard Hunting Methods

Baiting is a traditional method of hunting Leopards in Niassa. This process includes baiting areas where Leopards may likely be. Trail cams are used and when a suitable Tom is spotted, a temporary blind will be built 50 to 75 yards away.

When the Leopard returns to the bait, wait until he is in position and take the shot.

Tips when Leopard Hunting

The minimum legal caliber in Mozambique is a .375. Use good quality optics and ensure the rifle is test fired after being transported long distances.

Avoid shooting the cat when he is standing on his hind legs, or when it is lying down.  Be aware of the position of the Leopard vitals (shot placement) as they have the ability to move into all kinds of shapes and positions.

Traveling to Niassa for the African Hunt

You will need to fly into Oliver Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg in South Africa. From Johannesburg, you will then travel to Phemba in Mozambique. Airlink is a reliable airline, clean, on time and with decent food and drinks. More importantly, Airlink has facilities for transporting of firearms, just advise reservations when booking your flight. There is a small additional cost for processing the firearm. The cost of a return flight OR Tamba/Pemba is on average US$ 450.

Depending on flights from OR Tamba to Phemba, you may need to overnight in Johannesburg. We would recommend African Sky Boutique Hotel, situated nearby the airport, who also can assist with firearm permits and supply transfers to and from the hotel to the airport. For additional information, see “affiliated services” further below.

You have a choice of a long road transfer to the hunting lodge from Phemba (11hr + drive) or a charter flight (to be arranged with your outfitter, Hardus) that will take you to the landing strip near the hunting concession.

The hunting areas are true “wild Africa” and road transport is not only long, but sometimes slow going and tedious.  The Charter is US$ 5000 round trip (subject, like all things to change), but this can be less if there are any guests sharing.

Please note that the charter would need to be booked at least 2 months in advance and must be paid in cash on the day of your flight or pre-paid by wire transfer.
