The Lioness

Africa’s Big 5 are the most challenging animals in Africa to hunt on foot. These include the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, and Cape Buffalo. While lions are known as being the “King of the Jungle,” it’s actually the lionesses who are primarily responsible for more than 85% of the hunting for the pride. They are fast, stealthy, agile, and can reach up to 45 mph when chasing prey. These are all attributes that make hunting them even more dangerous.

Points worth considering when hunting a Lionesses in South Africa:
• Ensure that you are physically fit and mentally prepared to face one of Africa’s most dangerous apex predators.
• Work with experienced PHs and trackers who are knowledgeable about the area, the animal’s behavior, can track lions effortlessly, and ensure your safety during the dangerous game hunting safari.
• Time your hunt either at dusk or dawn, when these predators are more active.
• Lions are extremely territorial and nocturnal – studying their behavior may assist in predicting their movements.
• Ensure that you are knowledgeable about shot placement, resulting in a quick, ethical kill.
• Lion hunting is a dangerous and adrenaline-filled hunt: Stay calm, focused, and ready for quick decision-making by your PH.
• On that note, always listen to your PH on the hunt. It is their job to bring you back in one piece after a successful hunting safari.

The Lion Hunting Grounds

• The hunting grounds are 5,000ha.
• Hunting happens near Tosca, in the North West province, which is renowned for its plains, open savannas, and grasslands.
• The area’s vegetation consists of mixed grasslands with scattered shrubs and thorny acacia trees, mopane, and other drought-resistant species adapted to the semi-arid climate of the region.
• The natural vegetation supports a variety of wildlife, including large game species, making it a suitable habitat for Lions and other predators, such as Leopards, Cheetahs, African Wild Dogs, and Servals, amongst others.

The Hunting Lodge in South Africa

South African outfitters are renowned as some of the best worldwide, with their hospitality being legendary. This will be your home-away-from-home, where the day’s action will be relived over cold beers and tasty cuisine, served up by the lodge’s resident chef.
Your Lion hunting safari will see you staying at a hunting lodge just outside of Tosca. The lodge is well-appointed and oozes comfort, with large rooms looking out onto the African bushveld. Amenities include en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, a pool, and lounges / entertainment areas in which to relax.

Lion Hunting Methods & Rifle Calibers

Bow hunting of dangerous game is not allowed in South Africa, and a minimum of a .375 must be used when hunting dangerous game. For those hunters bringing their firearms into South Africa, a SAPS 520 Import Form needs to be completed.
Hunting methods for Lioness hunts are generally the traditional walk-and-stalk, after initially utilizing a vehicle to cover large distances while glassing. Trackers will look for tracks (spoor), or signs that the Lioness has been through the area, or spotting of the actual Lioness itself, or members of the pride.
From there onwards, the hunting party will proceed on foot, carefully using the terrain to their advantage as they slowly stalk this dangerous African cat until they are within striking range. Accurate shot placement is vital in securing your trophy lioness.
The legal requirement for Lion hunting in Africa is a .375 caliber. A 416 Rigby or a double rifle like a 470NE or 500NE are good choices, although many hunters prefer a .458 or a .458 Lott. Soft expanding tips work well when hunting this apex predator.
When on a Lioness hunting safari, use a rifle with good stopping power and one that you are comfortable and familiar with. Be sure to use premium-grade ammunition.
When hunting in South Africa, you experience dangerous game hunting at its best, with a Lioness being a challenging, yet rewarding trophy.

Beyond the Lioness Hunt

Apart from being a hunting adventure capital, South Africa is also a major tourist destination, drawing in crowds of visitors with varying interests. With many hunters looking for opportunities to bring the family along, a destination like South Africa offers a multitude of activities and tourism opportunities to keep the non-game hunter entertained. Many of South Africa’s tourist attractions and drawcards have a connection to the outdoors, making for adventures that can be a tame walk in the park or a jaunt on the wild side.

From the bush to the beach and almost everything in between, SA has something for everyone and every interest:
Northern Cape: The Northern Cape’s varied attractions take full advantage of the province’s wide-open land and expanses of nothingness. Once the game hunting is packed up, head to Sutherland and experience South Africa’s Largest Telescope (SALT). A prime spot for those looking to enjoy the beauty of the stars above that rich safari hunting land. One of the more well-known attractions is the Big Hole found in the region of Kimberley, where one can experience the largest hand-dug mining site in the world.
Western Cape: Apart from the incredibly beautiful landscapes, this iconic area offers fun attractions like the Cango Ostrich Farm, where visitors receive a message from the birds themselves, as well as the Cango Caves, the largest cave system in South Africa.
Eastern Cape: The EC region offers attractions ranging from those exploring the province’s rich history and natural beauty, to those seeking adrenaline. If you find yourself and your hunting adventure not too far from the main city of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), it’s not too long a drive before you reach the seaside mecca that is Jeffrey’s Bay, a great place to wash off the dust.
KwaZulu-Natal: KZN’s famous Umgeni River area is home to the Valley of 1000 Hills, an attraction that takes full advantage of some of the province’s lushest land. The area brings boating, fishing, and even plane tours to the public, but the best way to experience this area is by the 1000 Hills Choo Choo, a historic steam–train–powered tourist experience. For those looking to take full advantage of South Africa’s warm climate, visit the Golden Mile strip of beachfront coast as well as the iconic uShaka Marine World.
Mpumalanga: While the whole Blyde River Canyon is an attraction on its own, specific locations along the way include God’s Window, where, on a clear day, one can see to the Lebombo Mountains bordering Mozambique.
Limpopo: A combined experience for birding enthusiasts and water lovers, the Fundudzi River and Thathe Vondo Forest region is well worth a visit.
Free State: South Africa’s largest dam, the Gariep, is surrounded by a host of various accommodation facilities, from caravan parks and campsites to luxury resorts and chalet-style options. The area is famous for its array of activities, including traditional favorites like fly fishing, rafting, and horseback trails centering on the dam and its awesome scenery.
Gauteng: Something to thrill everyone, especially the youngsters, is Gold Reef City, South Africa’s most famous amusement park. A truly South African experience is Vilakazi Street in Soweto, the only street worldwide to have raised two Nobel Prize winners, namely Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
North West: One of the best ways to experience the North West is the iconic Hartbeespoort Cableway, the longest aerial cable car ride in Africa. This famous cableway showcases the wonders of both the Magaliesberg Mountains and Hartbeespoort Dam. For those looking to enjoy a little luxury, the place to go is South Africa’s famous Sun City resort.
