This is not an extremely physically challenging hunt, but the hunter needs to be in reasonable shape as in instances Koppies (hills) are ascended to get a bird’s eye view of the area, or to stealthily get into position for a shot over the gulleys and waterways.
As the hunting area is just so large, deep sea speed boats are used to traverse the shorelines to spot a big Crocodile sunning on the banks. Once a suitable Crocodile has been identified, you will stalk to within shooting distance, which can range from between thirty yards to one hundred yards. With the Crocodiles acute senses, approaching the Crocodile undetected is a lot more challenging than many hunters realize. They have incredible vision, hearing and smell and can detect vibration in the ground through specialized sensory organs on their skin called “integumentary sensory organs”. Be prepared to walk in your socks.
An experienced Crocodile hunter will tell you, crocodile hunting in Mozambique is more stressful than one would think. The first stress point when considering the shot is that many Crocodiles lay with their tails in the water. So, while the bull Crocodile may have a huge head, a good portion of the Crocodiles tail may be missing due to fighting, or the Crocodile early in life may potentially have been a larger Crocodiles sought after meal. This would affect the quality in length of the trophy Crocodile.
Understanding Crocodile Shot Placement, along with the ability to shoot “dead center” into the reptile’s tiny brain is of vital importance. Above the smile behind the eye, or directly into the spine.
