Going on safari to hunt a Cape Buffalo, Africa’s Black Death on the Dark Continent is a dream for many hunters. The Caprivi, now known as the Zambezi region, has Cape Buffalo herds in their thousands which migrate from the Chobe National Park in Botswana, crossing the Chobe River.
You may not be able to take your Cape Buffalo home with you, but you will have memories that will last a life time. Plus, for a real great price, your friend or spouse will be able to holiday in an incredible part of Africa, while experiencing a Cape Buffalo hunt.
When you factor in the costs of dip and pack, international shipping, space at home and taxidermy, I would rather go on two African Buffalo hunts than one. The costs exponentially increase when exporting any trophy out of Africa.
The Kabulabua Conservancy is characterized by the floodplains of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers and is a combination of open grassland, lush woodland forests, wetlands, rivers, and deltas.
The Caprivi Strip is a narrow piece of land that “juts out” in the Northeast corner of Namibia and is surrounded by Angola, Botswana, and Zambia. When traversing through the area, it is a surreal experience to have a different country on each side of the waterways.
The region is dominated by the Chobe, Okavango, and Zambezi Rivers. In this area, Cape Buffalo numbers are estimated at more than 4500. You will see plenty of Buffalo on this hunt.
The area is also packed with giant Crocodiles and is the only region in Namibia where Hippo hunts can be conducted. There are plenty of Crocodiles and grumpy old Hippo Bulls.
As the Kabulabua conservancy is across the Chobe River bordering the Chobe National Reserve, Elephant are also plentiful. Botswana has more Elephant than any other African country and Elephant hunting has recently been introduced to the country with the Government being under pressure from local communities.
The Caprivi, being characterised by floodplains is affected by the rainy season and literally “fills up” like a bathtub, which in turn supports the array of African wildlife and aquatic creatures.
The preferred season for a Cape Buffalo hunt will be during the drier months which run from May to September. Temperatures are also cooler reducing humidity and the risk of dehydration.
The buffalo hunting technique will vary from singling out old “Dugga Boys” to stalking a big buffalo bull in the herds on the open savannah.
Big bulls can be spotted while traversing and navigating the riverways and can be found immersed in the mud, hence the origin of the name, Dugga Boy!!
A typical day Buffalo hunting will begin after sunrise and a “proper African breakfast.” On our Hippo and Cape Buffalo hunt, we literally had to beg the chef to prepare less food for breakfast, but with the cuisine being of such a high standard, you cannot say no. Better to “walk it off.”
Hunting methods will vary depending on the level of the floodplains and options will be:
As the Caprivi is flat, walking a few miles a day is not classified as “extreme buffalo hunting” and in fact is very pleasant. However, be aware as the reedbeds are filled with monster Crocodile who will never turn down a quick meal, or grumpy Hippo out feeding. Do not get between a mother and her calf, or a big bull Hippo and the water.
Once fresh sign has been spotted, or a glimpse in the distance of an old Buffalo, the walk and stalk will begin.
Cape Buffalo shot placement is critical. Cape Buffalo are born mean and this big five African game animal knows how to play an extremely dangerous game. Poorly hit, Buffalo have adrenaline rushing through their bloodstream and if charging, only a bullet in the brain will stop a wounded Cape Buffalo. Buffalo will charge at the speed and power of a freight train.
NOTE: whether hunting exportable, or non-exportable Buffalo in the Caprivi, a bull of over 40 inches may not be shot and this rule has been in place since 2019. Historically, Cape Buffalo were indiscriminately hunted and for the next 6 years this rule will apply. This agreement in the interesting of restoring quality was made between all outfitters in Namibia and the Government. 40 inches is still a Trophy Buffalo and an absolute tank. Buffalo in the Caprivi are full of character and each one is unique.
Once the Buffalo is in the salt, and if there are remaining days, time can be spent traveling to the Chobe Reserve in Botswana, Tiger fishing or on a trip to Victoria Falls.
Non-Exportable Trophies: This hunt focuses on the challenge and achievement of tracking hunting and the thrill of the pursuit. While the trophies are non-exportable, the memories and stories you take home will be beyond compare.
Your Cape Buffalo hunt contributes to conservation: The outfitter is committed to building roads, rehabilitating waterholes, installing solar panels and water pumps.
The meat from this hunt (besides a back strap grilled to perfection on the open flame by your local chef) will be distributed to local communities. Building facilities (like schools) identified by the conservancy community. Employ and train local community members as trackers, skinners, chefs and camp attendants.
By participating in this hunt, you will directly contribute to local communities who value the improvements and contributions hunters bring. Communities have a vested interest in ensuring the preservation of Cape Buffalo populations and their habitats.
Classic tented safari camp (with firepit, lapa en-suite bathrooms generated electricity) right on the banks of the Chobe River. Each tent has two ¾ beds.
Via data roaming, internet is available. The camps are comfortable, stylish and a few nights listening to sounds of the Africa is rejuvenating. The staff are friendly, the chef is incredible, and the meals prepared are of exceptional quality. After a day of hunting, relax and recharge in style.
Guaranteed, this will be one of your most memorable African hunting safaris.
