The journey to Niassa is as much a part of the adventure as the hunt itself. To reach the hunting area in Coutada Marangira, you’ll first fly commercially from Johannesburg (JHB) to Pemba, Mozambique, with Airlink. From Pemba you will need to a charter flight to take you directly to the camp. The charter flight will need to be arranged in advance with Juan.
Alternatively, you can fly into Maputo, then take a local commercial flight to Lichinga, (this is offered through LAM Mozambique local airline) followed by a scenic six-hour drive to the camp.

For a Sable hunt in Mozambique, you’ll want a rifle that balances power, accuracy, and versatility—capable of cleanly taking down your Sable and everything from Impala potentially up to Eland.
.30 caliber rifles are perfect for hunting Sable
• .30-06 Springfield
• .308 Winchester
• .300 Winchester Magnum
• 338 Winchester Magnum (more punch for bigger species like Eland or Roan)
• or even a 7mm Remington Magnum will suffice
These calibers are legal, effective, and widely used across Africa for plains game. Bolt-action rifles are preferred for reliability and accuracy. A good scope (3–9x or 4–12x) is crucial—many shots are between 100–300 yards. Premium soft-point or bonded bullets like Swift A-Frame, Nosler Partition, or Barnes TSX are excellent. In Zambia the minimum caliber for plains game is .270 Win or equivalent. Only bolt-action and single-shot rifles are permitted (no semi-autos).
If you’re also considering hunting dangerous game (buffalo, lion, etc.), you’d need a minimum of .375 H&H, but that’s a whole different conversation…
Yes you can. You will need a valid firearm permit before you arrive in Mozambique, which Juan and his team will arrange.
They will need a scanned color copy of your passport, a color copy of a passport size photograph in Jpeg format, US Citizens, a copy of the customs form 4457, or a copy of the firearm license, proof of travel itinerary, details such as: home address, contact numbers, email etc.
If you are going to travel through South Africa and overnight, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form on arrival. Each hunter is allowed a maximum of three firearms to Mozambique, with a maximum of 100 rounds per firearm.
Mozambique is a malaria-prone area, so consult with your medical practitioner for prophylactic medication. Ensure your routine vaccinations, including hepatitis and tetanus, are up to date. A yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your travel history.
With Niassa Province being so remote and true wilderness, pack a small medical kit to include items such as: contact lens solutions, headache tablets, re-hydrate and “anti-rash” cream.
