Bushpig hunting at night is a thrilling test of skill and nerve that will push the hunter to their limits. The darkness will amplify, requiring you to rely on your instincts and senses like never before.
Hunting Bushpig in the dark will be the challenge. The nocturnal hunt will demand patience, precision, and a deep understanding of animal behaviour, along with the ability to stay awake and alert. The excitement hits when the still of the night is interrupted by the squealing of the Bushpigs as they race into the hunting area, fighting over the bait. South Africa is an incredible game hunting experience, especially when hunting these night critters.
The hunting concession is a privately owned reserve of more than ten thousand acres of pristine and unspoilt African bushveld, a hunter’s paradise.
The Bushpig Hunting Method
Hunting this nocturnal species of pig will require a variety of techniques. Bushpig hunting will be done by pre-baiting an area. Once the bait has been hit, it will be “game on” from the blind. Once Bushpigs have found the bait, it will be visited every evening by the team of pigs. Bushpigs are known to travel more than ten miles in an evening.
While modern day Bushpig hunting is done by making use of a trail cam to record the bushpig activities, it is also common practise to pour the bait over a large pile of rocks. After the Bushpigs have fed, the result will be rocks strewn all over the place, which is typical Bushpig behaviour.
On the very odd occasion, Bushpigs are sighted during the day feeding on old animal carcasses or in animal “bone yard” areas.
The best time to hunt plains game in South Africa is in the early morning after sunrise or the late afternoon magical hour when the bush “comes alive.” Ridges will be glassed and when the quarry is spotted, the hunt will commence following the walk and stalk method.
As this ranch is just so large, four by four vehicles may be used to cover more ground.
