Hunting in South Africa (Waterberg)

The Limpopo Province was named after the Limpopo River which forms the border between South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. The Western region, where the hunting ranch is situated offers a wide variety of scenic landscapes with incredible natural biodiversity. Topography includes valleys and plains, with iconic mountain ranges such as the Soutpansberg and Waterberg Mountain ranges. The Limpopo province is also home to the world’s largest and oldest Baobab tree.

Limpopo is the “Hunting Mecca” of South Africa, attracting more international hunters than any other province. More than 80% of South Africa’s private ranches are situated in the Limpopo Province. High fenced sustainable ranching has led to improved genetics, bigger trophies and has led to South Africa’s conservation success story. The famous Mapungubwe Nature Reserve and the northern part of the Kruger National Park are also situated in Limpopo.

Limpopo is also a popular destination for “night hunts” including Hyenas, Serval, Civet Cats, Honey Badgers and Caracal. Cites and Tops permits are required for certain species.

About Sable Antelope

Sable Hunt
Sable Hunt
  • The Sable Antelope (Hippotragus Niger) or “mbarapi” in Swahili, is considered by many hunters to be one Africa’s most sought-after plains game trophies.
  • A Sable bull is a remarkable sight and should be on your list on any African game hunting safari.
  • Sable herds usually involve cows, calves, and a dominant bull. Young males are chased off from the breeding heard at around three years and will form “Batchelor Groups”.
  • The breeding season of the sable antelope depends on the climate, with births taking place in the rainy season when food and coverage are more available. Females gestate for 9 months and birth a single calf that at birth is sandy-colored.
  • Sable antelope consume leaves of mid-length grasses and herbs, but, when necessary, will chew bones to boost mineral intake.
  • Predators of Sable include lions, leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, and Nile crocodiles. Adult sables will fight aggressively, using their horns to impale their attacker and cause death.
  • A trophy Sable is a bull measuring greater than 42 inches from the base of the horns to the tip.

About Roan Antelope

  • Roan Hunting
    Roan Hunting

The Roan Antelope, (Hippotragus equinus) is a large savannah dwelling antelope named after its Roan colour (coat pattern) and in South Africa is classified as one of the “exotic antelope species”.

  • Both males and females have a set of “recurved horns,” larger in males made from Keratin.
  • Roan are some of the world’s largest antelope, and adult males can weigh over six hundred pounds.
  • Hunters value roan antelope hunts for their impressive size, beauty, and the challenge of pursuing this large, powerful, and dangerous animal, making them a highly sought-after trophy.
  • Roan antelope prefer to graze on grasses and shrubs while occasionally consuming herbs and tree pods. They consume vast amounts of water and seek out territories close to watering holes or water sources.

The African Outfitter on this Hunt

Hannes and the team have been conducting both plains and dangerous game hunts in Limpopo since 2006, operating in the “Kransberge” region which forms part of the Waterberg Mountain range in Thabazimbi. Their primary objective is to give international hunters the opportunity to experience the Waterberg like nowhere else.

Every client, whether new to hunting, or an experienced “veteran”   will have the experience of a lifetime and hunting safaris are designed to accommodate individual needs. The hunting lodge is “family friendly” and “top class”. Hannes encourages hunters to bring additional visitors and families to enjoy the Limpopo Province in SA.

Tips when Game Hunting in South Africa

  • Ensure that your paperwork is on order (rifle permits etc.)
  • Pack appropriately for the climate/season of the hunting safari along with the terrain
  • Foreign hunters do not require VISA’s (USA.UE, UK, Australia), unless staying more than 90 days
  • Listen to your Professional Hunter (animal behavior, safety)
  • Always Stay Hydrated (water)
  • Be physically fit in relation to the conditions of the African hunt.
  • Practice responsible shooting techniques before commencement of the Hunting Safari

Sable and Roan Game Hunting Methods

This combination hunt is in typical African safari style using the “walk and stalk” method, emphasizing the principles of “fair chase”. A safari truck may also be utilized to cover “more miles”. The hunting grounds in the Limpopo Province are a combination of hilly, mountainous, and open grass land areas.

Hunters may also follow the “ambush method” of plains game hunting by camouflaging themselves along frequently used game trails and strategic vantage points.

What is the difference between Sable and Roan?

Sable have larger curved horns but a smaller body, colloquially know as “swartwitpens” directly translated means “black white belly”, while Roan have shorter thicker horns, with less of a curve and a larger body than a Sable.  Sable also have distinctive brown ears that are shorter than the Roan.

Traveling for the “Exotic” Plains Game Hunting Safari

Nothing beats the excitement of an African hunting safari adventure! Arriving at Johannesburg’s Oliver Tambo International Airport, you will be met by Hannes or a member of the team, who will assist with any rifle collections. Transport from Oliver Tambo will be by road and takes about three hours through rolling hills and tranquil valleys.

Depending on departure and arrival times of international flights into South Africa, it may be required to overnight in Johannesburg. Should this additional night be needed, we would suggest African Sky Boutique Hotel who are conveniently situated nearby the airport. African Sky, also provided transfers to and from the airport and can assist with any rifle import permits which can be arranged before arriving in South Africa. For further information, see “Affiliated Services” below.

Accommodation & Lodgings

Hunting Lodge
Hunting Lodge

The hunting lodge is four star with incredible views of the African sunsets. Spacious rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, luxury bathrooms, outdoor showers with views over the pool deck. The hunting lodge also features a private massage spa, whiskey bar, gym and TV area situated nearby a magnificent outdoor entertainment area.

Hunters and non-hunting companions will be relaxing in tranquil surroundings, enjoying exceptional service and cuisine.

Hunting Season in South Africa

South Africa is not regulated with regards to a specific hunting season and plains game hunting safaris take place throughout the year. The cooler months, which run from April to October, are preferred. In summer, the temperatures are high and can exceed 10 Fahrenheit. The drier months see the grasses being shorter in the veld, and the bush veld not as dense, both of which allow hunters to more easily spot their prey.

From early December to February, these months are known as the “wet season” in Limpopo. Rain showers and harsh weather can continue for days.

Rifles and Permits when Safari Hunting in SA

To apply for sports shooting permit, a SAPS 520 form will need to be completed which you can be obtained online.

You will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Hannes and proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).

The temporary import permit allows for hunters to bring a maximum of four rifles, with neither two being the same caliber. No more than two hundred rounds of ammunition per caliber.
