Hunting Methods for Plains Game in South Africa

Nyala hunting
Trophy Nyala

Hunting plains game in South Africa is in typical ” African safari”  style using the “walk and stalk” method. You will wake up early after a light breakfast and head out to waterholes and or ridges and glass the terrain.

A safari truck may be made use of to move around and cover “more miles”.  The hunting grounds in the Kwazulu-Natal  Province are a combination of hilly, mountainous and open grass land areas.

Hunters can also follow the “ambush method” of game hunting by camouflaging themselves along frequently used game trails and strategic vantage points or by making use of temporary blinds.

Traveling to the Game Hunting Grounds

Upon arrival in South Africa at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, you will be met Johann, or by a representative of the company  who will assist you with firearm clearance and transfer to your accommodation for the evening, before you head to the hunting concession.

The road transfer from Johannesburg will take approximately 5 ½ hours, during which time you will experience the diverse range of landscapes from the high veld in Gauteng as you leave Johannesburg, to the lush, greener areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

Trophy Hunting in South Africa

Africa’s “gray ghost”, the Kudu is a challenging hunt for even experienced hunters, with their ability to simply “blend in” with their surroundings and camouflage themselves remarkably well. They are also often referred to as the “king of the spiral-horned antelopes” with their graceful horns reaching which can reach over 60 inches.

Nyala can be difficult hunt. The best time to target these beauties (and they are true beauties!) is early in the morning or late afternoon as they head to graze or to the water hole to drink.

Blue Wildebeest, also often referred to as “the clown of he bush”, with a  stocky front end and slender hindquarters. It is said that Blue Wildebeest look as if they have been built from spare parts. Also known as the “poor man’s buffalo” this South African plains game species is set to test hunter’s perseverance, these animals are exceptionally tough.

Bushbuck are a medium-sized antelope that is also a master of camouflage, which requires patience on the part of the hunter to target this species.

No African plains game hunt is complete without a hunting a Warthog. Be prepared for a lightning-quick opponent on this hunt. Warthog are also often hunted from a blind or near a water hole. Impala, another favorite African antelope is an attractive medium-sized antelope with a striking set of horns..

Rifle & Permits when Hunting in South Africa

To apply for a temporary import permit for sport hunting a SAPS 520 form will need to be completed. You will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Johann and proof of ownership (Firearm License or Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
