When hunting Africa’s Black Death very accurate and precise shot placement is required, as this member of the Big 5 and Dangerous 7 is known to double back on hunting parties, making the hunter the hunted!
As with any member of the Big 5 or Dangerous 7, the minimum legal requirement for Cape Buffalo hunting is a .375 caliber shooting a 300-grain bullet. A well-placed bullet from a 416 Rigby, 404 Jeffery, 458 WM, or Lott will also bring down this tough bovine. Double rifles such as the 470NE, 500NE, and up are preferred, especially in close quarters.
• Hunt with an experienced PH who is knowledgeable about the area, species, and conditions.
• Listen to your PH and follow their instructions implicitly. It is their job to get you out of there in one piece, with your chosen trophy.
• Ensure that you have done your homework and know the anatomy of the animal you are targeting, to ensure accurate and correct shot placement.
• The minimum caliber rifle for dangerous game hunting in Tanzania is a .375. Ensure that your rifle meets or exceeds this.
• Don’t be in a rush; take your time to get the perfect shot in.
• After that perfect shot, be ready for a follow-up shot or two in quick succession.
• Use vegetation to your advantage to remain undetected while approaching the animal downwind.
• Always remain alert and ready; the bush – and its inhabitants – wait for nobody.
Hunting in the Selous is a bucket list activity for many, with the region offering so many unique experiences. The Selous is known for its abundant and diverse game species within the untamed and untouched Tanzanian wilderness, where hunters experience a range of landscapes while hunting in the region. From woodlands, grasslands, and forests to rivers, swamps, and miombo bush, the diverse landscapes provide a great challenge for the hunting community.
