This Buffalo hunt is for Big Buffalo in the Free State Province of South Africa, bordering the Northern Cape.
**** Observers on this Cape Buffalo hunt are welcome at US$ 200 per day per person.
Werner and Carmen have put together this incredible safari hunting, and along with the Cape Buffalo, more than 30 other species are also available.
Buffalo Cows, which are just as dangerous and make for an action-packed safari can be added for only US$ 2500 (Buffalo hunting, as first-time hunters will learn, is exceptionally addictive!).
2 x Hunters 1 x Professional Hunter 8 Nights for a discounted price of US$ 9 500 each
These prices and service offers are incredible, considering the trophy size of Cape Buffalo. 42 and above inches is huge!!
The hunting safari is conducted from a 4-star lodge which is situated on the concession. The rooms are upmarket and feature plush beds, en-suite bathrooms and showers. Wireless internet is readily available.
The cuisine is excellent, and the lodge has numerous dining and relaxing areas (inside and out) where you will be sure to enjoy many “cold beverages” after a hard day’s hunting.
Your chef will gladly prepare you a local “braai”, (barbeque) where you can sample flame grilled Buffalo backstraps, or tenderloins and delicacies from a variety of African plains game species. Werner and Carmen are excellent hosts and you will spend many hours sharing your hunting adventures and safari tales.
This trophy Cape Buffalo hunt will be done on foot, following the principles of fair chase. Tracking will be the main buffalo hunting method, but spotting and stalking may also be used.
This is truly a dangerous game hunting safari, and these big boys will be found in “the thick stuff” making the hunt exceptionally dangerous. Werner and the team will work hard to find you your dream buffalo. Some Buffalo will have deep drops and curls, others wide spreads with big bosses, but one thing for sure, they are all mean as can be! Buffalo are referred to as “Africa’s Black Death” or “Windowmakers” for a reason.
Cape buffalo are exceptionally cunning and wise. Buffalo are known to outsmart both hunters and predators. A buffalo in charge is going to come to you like a freight train, charging more than 35 miles an hour. A Buffalo shows no emotion or behavior change before a charge, be on your A-game to avoid being caught unawares!
The Cape Buffalo is an exceptionally tough member of the African big 5. Poorly hit, Cape Buffalo are incredibly difficult to stop. Only a frontal brain shot will stop a Buffalo in his tracks.
Social media platforms are forever posting Cape Buffalo charges, and many outfitters who were not on their game on the day, have either moved on, or have battle scars as a daily reminder.
As they say, it takes one bullet to kill a Cape Buffalo, and another good few to convince him of the fact. It is the “dead” Buffalo that will kill you.
Buffalo shot placement is all about anchoring the beast. Head shots should be avoided, unless the buffalo is in full charge. The preferred shot would be a third of the way up the shoulder, into the vitals, immediately followed up by a few more well-placed bullets ensuring that the Buffalo is anchored and very dead. Approach with the extreme caution.
On a buffalo hunt, we at Game Hunting Safaris are firm believers that there can never be too much gun. As much as shot placement is always a critical factor, the hunter needs a rifle with stopping power.
A .375 loaded with good quality 300 grain bullets is the minimum legal requirement when dangerous game hunting in South Africa. But bigger caliber rifles such as a .458, .458 Lott, .404, .416 are also recommended along with any big double.
When making your choice of what rifle to bring, as a rule of thumb bring the biggest caliber that you can accurately shoot and handle with confidence.
Hunting takes place all year around, however the cooler and drier months are preferred, which extend from April to late October.
International inbound flights will see hunters landing at Oliver Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg. From OR Tambo, a regional flight needs to be taken to Kimberly. Airlink is recommended for regional flights as the airline is affordable (US$150 to US$200 return), professional, and on time. Airlink also is equipped to safely transport firearms.
To import a firearm, you will need to complete a SAPS 520 form.
International hunters bringing their own rifles will need to provide copy passports, copy airline tickets, letter of invitation from Werner and team, proof of ownership (Customs declaration form 4457 for US citizens).
If you are planning to overnight in Johannesburg, see our list of affiliate services. Africa Sky Boutique is highly recommended. Their team can also assist with transfers to and from Oliver Tambo, as well as deal with all rifle import permits and obtain pre-clearance approvals, thus avoiding delays at point of entry.
Once the trophy Cape Buffalo is harvested and, in the salt, there are a variety of additional trophies that can be hunted. A few of the all-time African plains game favorites include:
