A typical day Rhino hunting will commence shortly after sunrise where the hunting party will leave the lodge in search of a suitable trophy Rhino. When dangerous game hunting for White Rhino, the hunter will need to stalk “up close and personal” to the quarry and ensure that shot placement is “on the money”. A wounded Rhino is dangerous and a situation like this will be life threatening.
A charging Rhino does not present the hunter with many options as the brain cannot be easily penetrated from the front. The shot that your professional hunter will recommend is when the Rhino is standing broadside, and the bullet will be aimed at the heart and vital organs.
Besides Rhino hunting, this large area has many other species available which can be added to the hunting safari, including dangerous game hunting for Cape Buffalo, and plains game hunts for Sable, Roan, Gemsbok, and exotics such as Golden Wildebeest.
Kudu hunting in South Africa is also a favourite activity and this area in known to produce exceptional spiral horn trophies.
Rhinos are pachyderms, meaning that a Rhino has incredibly thick skin. The hunter is going to need a large calibre rifle with a quality tip designed for penetration.
Calibres such a .375, 416 Rigby, .458 or .458 Lott are going to be needed to ensure that the vitals are penetrated. An excellent quality double rifle, namely a 470 or 500 Nitro Express will also work well. When it comes to Rhino hunts, stopping power is needed.
Wounding: Trophy fees on animals wounded or lost will be charged, plus 15% Vat.
Rhino hunts in SA are best during the cooler months, which run from April to September. South Africa does not have a set hunting season and Rhino hunting safaris can take place all year around, without any restrictions.
Rhino populations in South Africa is closely monitored and permits are only issues in instances where Rhino populations are stable.
