Big Game Hunting in Zambia does not get much better than Leopard and Buffalo in Rufunsa.
Leopards, as per the IUCN are classified as vulnerable. Before embarking on the leopard hunting quest, a prearranged license and Cites permit is a requirement.
A successful Leopard hunt is no easy task. Hunts can be incredibly frustrating as these cats are these shy animals exceptionally cunning with acute senses including small and hearing. These cats needed too be “lured in”, compared to other dangerous game animals where they are pursued.
In Zambia, which offers some of Africa’s finest Leopard hunts, Leopards are hunted over a bait. It is unlawful to hunt Leopards at night. Hunts can only take place half an hour before sunset, and the same time after sunrise.
For bow hunters, Leopards can be legally hunted with a bow, Steven can provide further information if required.
Leopard hunts in Zambia are subject to strict quota. Hunting is limited to only hunting mature males.
On a Leopard hunt, trophy judgement is not always about the size of Leopard. A trophy Leopard is a mature male. Steven your outfitter/PH, will usually be able to judge the quality of the Leopard by checking trail cam footage, based on the size of the head, neck and body of the cat.
When Leopard hunting, what is the most important is Leopard shot placement. A wounded Leopard is extremely dangerous and life threatening. there are many PH’s hunting in Africa who, luckily are still alive to attest to this fact.
Tracking a wounded Leopard, day or night is sure to get the heart racing and adrenaline pumping, and definitely not for the faint hearted.
This dangerous game hunt takes place in the Rufunsa GMA, which is situated in the lower Zambezi Valley. The hunting concession borders the Zambezi National Park and just across the river is the renowned Chewore Safari Area of Zimbabwe.
Rufunsa GMA is more than 800 000 acres in size and acts as a significant “buffer zone” to the eastern border of the Lower Zambezi National Park.
Vegetation in Rufunsa is typical Mopani woodland and thick Jesse bush, perfect for Free- Range dangerous game hunts.
The thick vegetation delivers a wide variety of African plains game antelope such as Lechwe (Black and Kafue), Puku, Sable, Kudu and Roan to name a few. Zambia also has sustainable and healthy populations of Defassa Waterbuck, Cookson Wildebeest and Lichtenstein Hartebeest.
Rufunsa has extremely healthy populations of Cape Buffalo. While the exact numbers are difficult to pinpoint, it’s estimated to be several thousand.
Rufunsa in recent years has been under hunted, so if a big Tom Leopard or Lion on your list, Rufunsa is a go-to concession in Zambia.
The hunting lodge is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River and consists of three newly erected permanent chalets.
Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom with all the modern amenities that can be expected.
There is a central dining and outdoor entertainment area with incredible views of the Zambezi River.
The hunting lodge is secluded and extremely comfortable. The chef will prepare African themed delicacies and will not hesitate to barbeque a Buffalo back-strap grilled to perfection over the open coals. It has been said (we at GHS cannot vouch for it, only Lion), that Leopard back-straps in fact taste fantastic. Steven and the chef may be able to enlighten you.
In camp, there is WI-FI available for hunters, juggling hunting, work and family.
Hunters will enter Zambia via Lusaka and land at Kennith Kaunda International Airport. A popular route is to fly via Oliver Tambo International Airport in South Africa using airlines such as Airlink which are affordable. Airlink is geared to cater for the transport of firearms. Airlink do need to be notified when purchasing tickets that you will be travelling with firearms and there is an additional nominal cost involved.
If you are planning to overnight in Johannesburg, South Africa, please see our affiliated services link below. African Sky Boutique Hotel provides transfers to hunters, both to and from OR Tambo and can also assist with rifle permits.
Included in the quoted price, are return road transfers from Kennith Kaunda International in Lusaka to the hunting lodge. This transfer will take approximately 3 to 5 hours, depending on road conditions at the time. A private charter can be arranged with Steven reducing the travelling time to Rufunsa to approximately 40 minutes.
A Yellow fever vaccination certificate is a requirement.
Zambia and the Rufunsa Concession is a malaria area. Taking the necessary precautions is essential. Your local physician will assist.
A tetanus shot, while not a requirement is suggested. Better safe than sorry!!
On any African safari, hunting or not, ask your physician for a general antibiotic. One often seems to get a “bug” following long international flights.
While this Leopard hunt is already going to be keeping the hunter terribly busy, there may be a few available days to enjoy additional plains game hunts, especially some of the endemic species. Rufunsa GMA has good populations has a history of producing excellent trophies.
Hunting in Zambia takes place between the months of May to December. May to August would be preferable as these are the cooler and drier months. During the wetter months, certain areas are not possible to entre by vehicle.
The reality is, there is no “best” or “worst” time. Hunting in Zambia is a privilege!!
The minimum legal caliber when dangerous game hunting is a .375. Meaning, that if you are hunting any of Africa’s big five (Elephant, Leopard, Lion, Rhino (no legal hunting in Zambia) or Cape Buffalo, this is the smallest legal caliber.
Quality ammunition is important. When dangerous game hunting in Zambia, both shot placement, and the quality of the bullet make a material difference. Bullet performance and accuracy make a difference between the animal either being humanely killed and harvested, or a problem animal leading to unnecessary complications.
